Brazilian Portuguese 🇧🇷

Hey guys started learning Portuguese (Brazilian) on November 1st. Any recommendations for me? Right now I’m just immersing and listening to the language. Surprisingly I understand a lot however I’m having a hard time with words just as how, is, that, as these words seem to change depending on the sentence. Any recommendations? Muito obrigado!

If you are a Spanish and English speaker, I recommend the book "Com Licença, brazilian português for native spanish/english speakers"

Study some grammar. It doesn't have to be a lot or your only source of studying, but you need to study some grammar. The way verbs work in Portuguese is different than English, the word order can also differ a bit and for an English speaker it may be hard to get gendered words at first. All of this are things you have to dedicate some time to understand and so you can write/ speak better when you practice.

80 to 90% of your time watch, listen and read content

10 to 15% live tutoring

5 to 10 % grammar study depending on your experience

Maths might not work out but you get the idea.

Comprehensible input is crucial and should be a a focus. Speaking practice obviously with a skilled tutor to make sure you learn to speak properly from the get go.

Grammar is just to make sense of/ reinforce what you learn in input and speaking practice. For example you watch and notice a verb change after a certain word. Look up why and try to notice it again. Tbh if you have a good tutor grammar will be incorporated into speaking so you may not need to do dedicated grammar study.

Google/YouTube “comprehensible input” and join the cult…

I still can’t understand what people are saying so I haven’t found any comprehensible input yet. I have classes and practice every day with my girlfriend but I still can’t understand what people are saying. We’ve been practicing for over 5 years now. What’s the secret to making out what people are saying? How do I understand Portuguese words without translating everything? Thanks

Do you watch much Portuguese tv? I’ve found watching hours of Spanish tv every week to help my listening and comprehension. Before that my comprehension was much worse. It’s still not good in every situation. Listening to fast speakers in real time with regional accents using slang is hard and takes hundreds of hours to develop. I wouldn’t worry too much and keep working on it.

I practice every day with my girlfriend who only speaks Portuguese and I watch movies and YouTube videos. I visit Brazil often too. Thanks

You need to train your portuguese with Brazilians. Something you should do is consume some Brazilian content on YouTube and search for Brazilian in Omegle por example. Something taht english speaking Brazilians love to do is to talk to gringos, we really love to know that our language and culture is been learned by another countries.

Go on omegle once you confident enough, brazillians love gringos that put a effort on learning their language.

The Foreign Service Institute used to host a plethora of free language courses. These were archived.

The one you want is the Fast Brazilian Portuguese. Book and audio.

Yes makes sense. Immersion is definitely the most important thing. Your brain will naturally start to decode the language

My brain hasn’t decoded it yet. It’s like my brain’s operating system is English only. It’s very frustrating.

I recommend finding a tutor and start practing from day one! For immersion, I have a movie club. We watch a movie, I create a list of vocabulary, we practice over the week and have a meet on Sunday to use it. If you're interested, you can find me https://www.italki.com/en/teacher/2413182
if you'd like to see what a lesson with me is like: https://youtu.be/vELsQlBM52s
or by e-mail: portuguesewithmovies@gmail.com

I hope you find the best way, the one the suits you best!

cheers!

I’ve visited Brazil 18 times but I still can’t read or converse. How do people learn Portuguese words and understand them without translating everything?
