Lesson learned .. galactic maps and steep canyons don't mix! o7

I spent ages binding stuff to my hotas controls, only to find out it likes to activate all the things at random every now and then.
So now I have to peek out of VR to use my keyboard for certain stuff - really breaks the immersion, but it's better than suddenly finding yourself with no shields, limited to docking speed and staring at your galaxy map mid-battle...

I had a similar issue. It came down to a power usage issue. I put the throttle on its own powered USB hub and never had the random button presses again.

This is the one thing I haven't tried yet. Finding one in my price range has proven difficult.

i had a similar experience, plus in VR its really hard to quickly revert it, i use the Mode switch on the hotas for galaxy, system, fss .. making them really hard to do by misstake

Regardless of hotkeys, don't open your map while canyon flying, an I right?

Really out of the way so I don't fat finger it.
I'm in VR here, so using the keyboard is somewhat clumsy for me. I really just need to remove the binds. I don't need them really!
If you've got a few dollars to spare, I highly recommend VoiceAttack with a voice pack from hcs. You can try out VA for free to see if you like it. I play in VR as well, and it completely opened up areas of the game that I wasn't interested in before because of all the key bind messiness.
Aye, this. I took all non-essentials off hotkeys and keybinds as I can never see a reason I'd need to look at a map or lower my landing gear under exigent circumstances. About 90% of everything I can access via panels was removed from bindings since I switched over to VR.
