Sonnet describing the longing of the Mistress in absence of her

Poem

How arduous a wait of many days,

for but the hope of glimpsing thee again,

from earthly toil, by thee, my effort strays,

and filled am I for lovelorn, longing pain.

Yea, no distraction all the parted hours,

when but thy name is pondered in my mind,

can stem thy likeness, sweeter than all flow'rs,

for to thee is my mind's eye aye aligned.

For seeing thee is worth a thousand dreams,

which I, sick in thy absence, dream replete,

but in the flesh, my spirit bursts its seams,

for seeing thee doth make my soul complete.

What know or care I for sobriety,

thy name alone intoxicateth me.

Thank you for sharing this sonnet. A thing I like about poetry is discover words I knew not. This piece of poetry did that for me. Plus, the poem expressed the feeling of agitation that animates the soul while we are longing for something or someone.

Thank you- I've found out that this agitated mindset is a really weird kind of stimulation for the creative output.

I really love the use of sonnet here, it’s so intriguing and adds a lot of depth to the double entendres in here, and the use of ‘eye aye’ in this form is so interesting. This is the kind of poem I would love to hear read aloud by a couple different people in a row to hear all the different meanings that could be drawn out with inflection. Keep up the good work, would love to see this become part of a sonnet series!

Thank you- I've a few other sonnets written down, which I'll try and publish in the near future

Well written. I definitely would like to see more in the same style. It is very clear that the poet finds relief from despair just by thinking of the mistress.

Your diction is amazing, and very fitting for the topic of the poem. Your poem is quite Shakespearean in nature, especially in the reference to the speaker's "mind's eye." All in all, a great, pleasant poem to read.

Brilliant!

I loved "seeing thee is worth a thousand dreams," and "thy name alone intoxicateth me". Such beautiful and romantic lines in a great sonnet.

Thank you- I feel as though I, through writing this kind of poetry, might be slipping a little too much into the character of a hapless petrarchan.

This was beautiful. I enjoyed the way it played against my mind.

Love it! The “eye aye” is very fun to say and adds to the poem. I enjoy the grammatical structure of your sentences, how verbs can follow their objects or the displacement of words in order to achieve the rhymes. The couplet is so powerful, love the ending
