Down a River

Poem

While I flow down this river
I think I'm at peace
a glimpse of a joyride
that forever can't be.

A cascade's approaching
right now I can't see
but my fear of losing
designed it for me.

My paddle is with me
a scary device
'cause if I take action
it might not suffice.

But I trust my body
and mind will be one
when I take my paddle
and change what will come.

Your stanzas are very nicely connected to tell a story.

Also really like the push/pull or good news/bad news oscillation, such as:
"I'm at peace" ... "forever can't be"

Saved!

Hello readers, welcome to OCpoetry. This subreddit is a writing workshop community -- a place where poets of all skill levels can share, enjoy, and talk about each other's poetry. Every person who's shared, including the OP above, has given some feedback (those are the links in the post) and hopes to receive some in return (from you, the readers).

If you really enjoyed this poem and just want to drop a quick comment, to show some appreciation or give kudos, things like "great job!" or "made me cry", or "loved it" or "so relateable", please do. Everyone loves a compliment. Thanks for taking the time to read and enjoy.

If you want to share your own poem, you'll need to give this writer some detailed feedback. Good feedback explains from your point of view what it was like to read the poem, and then tries to explain how the poem made you feel like that. If you're not sure what that means, check out our feedback guide, or look through the comment sections of any other post here, or click the links to the author's feedback above. If you're not sure whether your comments are feedback, or you have any other questions, please send us a modmail.

forever can't be

is an awkward construction

the whole thing just doesn't scan right to me

That's okay. And I agree this poem has a few awkward sections.

At first, I disagreed with MochiLazar; but with subsequent readings, I can see what they mean.

“be” does tie in to the rhyme scheme for the following stanzas, but it feels a little forced when rhymed with “peace.”

I think the intended meaning is something like, “this joyride can’t last forever,” but it also translates to “this joyride can never be.”

I think an alternate wording that could help with both of these points would be something like,

“While I flow down this river
I think I’m at peace;
enjoying a joyride
that’s destined to cease”?

But, this isn’t a workshop post, and I’m no expert. It’s your poem, and a good one too; and ultimately, what you like is what matters.

In any case, I enjoyed your poem. The analogy is very solid. I know “going with the flow” and flowing water as an analogy for time may be used a lot, but I think you managed to do something pretty unique with it.

The choice to navigate the flow of a river being analogous to the choice of navigating the ever progressing time of a lifespan is cool. It’s like using rough seas as an analogy for struggle, but more specific.

Thanks for sharing.

Thank for taking the time to write this. I can really appreciate some constructive criticism.

I started writing poems about a week ago just for the purpose of creatively expressing my feelings for myself. For some reason I decided that this was one that I wanted to share and I'll probably keep most of my future poems to myself.

But thanks again, your words give me something to think about.

I hope you decide to post more in the future. I like the style.

Either way, I’m glad you shared this one.
