Back to the drawing board
I spent six months agonizing over what my next car should be. I’ve only had hand me downs so I didn’t know how to shop or what to look for. Finally settled on Subaru Crosstrek and was excited about making a decision. Told my mechanic: his eyes went wide, and he mouthed, “NO!” He told me the repairs are frequent and expensive, that there was a $7k transmission job happening in the shop right now. Told me Lexus was the only way. Thoughts?

Toyota/Lexus makes a very reliable vehicle. Lexus is their luxury brand that will cost more to buy/maintain/insure/fuel. Most of the same vehicle platforms are also offered under the Toyota brand are equally reliable and a lot cheaper (also a lot less fancy). I wouldn't say that a Subaru Crostrek is a terrible choice, but if you just want an all purpose "car" that meets most peoples needs with good reliability and efficiency, Toyota Camry & Toyota RAV4 are both good choices
