The Artist

Poem

He picks out a pencil and studies the page

On the stark white sheet, he sets the stage

With practiced movement he adds his lines

Thinking and drawing to pass the time

He pushes and pulls

Time fades away

Trapped in each detail

He makes his escape

As he shades and adds detail

He corrects all his errors

A sheet empty and pale

Now rising with layers

He blows dust off the page

Adds finishing touches

A finished portrait

Is within his clutches

He stands and observes

And with satisfaction

He initials the work

In the fading distraction

He sighs and tenses

Then has an idea

He clears off his desk, and with no time for delay

He picks out a pencil and studies the page
