My Backyard Coach (a daughter's pov)
He may of never had a son to carry on the family name
But had a house full of girls that he loved all the same
We learned to bait a hook, showed us how to fight
He done his very best to teach us wrong from right
I never will forget, one very special date
He walked through the door as it was getting late
Handed me a glove and said for me to follow
We threw the ball til dark, like there was no tomorrow
My palm burned in that glove, he didn’t cut us any slack
Then I would try my very best to burn him right back
He showed me the ropes, and at the end of each session
We would sit down on the ground, and he’d teach me a lesson
Keep your laces tied, never show up late
Respect the other players, be a good teammate
Try your very best if they ever give you a shot
Cause out there on that field, you’ll have to earn your spot
I taught you how to fight, and you know how to spit
have yourself a good time, but don’t take any shit
Last but not least, the most important thing of all
Don’t forget to smile and keep your eye on the ball
At my very first game, his eyes never left mine
He shared my disappointment, as he watched me ride the pine
He said, "just be patient kid," as a tear dropped from my eye
"I’ll meet you at the truck after I have a word with this guy"
Now, I may never know what was said that day
But the very next game I got my chance to play
As I stepped up to the plate ready to give it my very all
I looked to him and smiled then kept my eye on the ball
