The Guardian

Poem

The dutiful guardian

makes her rounds in

cosmic clockwork.

She patrols as usual

‘round the blue rotunda,

much as she has since

time immemorial.

She has dedicated her life

in service to her detail,

a devoted sentry against threats

from the black beyond.

Always maintaining eye contact,

her craggy countenance

memorializes her many battles

over untold eons.

When the hordes rained

titanic stones upon them all,

the guardian sacrificed her body

to blunt the onslaught.

When celestial storms threatened

to sweep their very air away,

she drew the cataclysmic winds

towards her instead.

Through every chaotic epoch,

across every perilous period,

she has protected them

with affectionate tenacity.

Times were peaceful now

in their pocket of existence,

the grounds now an arboretum

overflowing with abundant life.

It fills the heart of the guardian,

and in this hard-earned tranquility

she is content to mind her post,

forever.

Until the day their sun

dwarves into faded ivory,

the Moon will keep faithful watch

over her beloved Earth.
