sunday school
sunday school taught me that eve was made from the fresh flesh of adam,
and that all of her daughters carry the shame of being created from something halved.
sunday school swears that
a man can complete me,
so, i burn the love letters i wrote
to the girl i sit next to in geometry with the pretty smile.
you know the one.
she looks like a religious icon; someone you’d sacrifice yourself for.
just to get a chance to touch her plump, rose lips.
when I fall asleep,
a woman is always loitering in my dreams
waiting.
she guides my hand to my own ribcage,
“see?" she says to me
“you're alone, but you can still breathe."
i wake up alone and weep quietly into my pillowcase.
because it’s the only thing that can catch these tears,
and not preach I’m guilty,
or worthless,
or a sinner.
lord, answer me, please,
have I been a good daughter?
know i lie to you,
but when i count my ribs i know you also lie to me.
rough draft, and sorry about the quality; i don’t usually write poetry :)
