The End of Humanity

Workshop

➊

I look into the sea and do a double take
I find there are no more great leaps to make
The final chapter of history is halfway through
The sea is all filled and you can’t create anything new

➋

But, oh, we are at the edge of time
Every story’s been told and we’ve made every rhyme
The past shoves me along into the future
Mother Creation wants it all wrapped up. Who could blame her?

➌

To create until nothing is left to create
There’s nothing to make now, I waited too late
Every clever metaphor for everything’s been thought of
Every book’s been written and every author’s been killed off

➍

To write the epilogue, there’s not left a single word
All the words are now spent and reusing is absurd
I think of an idea and find it’s already been done
Every mountain’s been scaled and all the distance has been run

➎

The apocalypse is here, the end of the world is near
I knew it was close and it was my greatest fear
If only I could annihilate all history of art
Start from scratch and pour out all my heart

➏

Freedom again, without all that past precedent
So I could just write without thinking of what the words meant
Without the knowledge of far better written literature
Imaginations so vivid, so vast beyond anything I could picture

➐

But now we are here, right at the edge of time
I have nothing more to say and nothing’s left to rhyme
The poem’s all well and done and we’ve all had our fun
Though…I hate to admit...I just realized that I may have jumped the gun
