s5e1 is so Sad

I've been binging this show recently. Just watched S5E1. Wow that's depressing. I get to get some plot armor they had to get everyone back.

But to see them all literally fail after leaving community college then return to community college........

Most of their lives were already ruined which resulted in them going to community college in the first place.

To exhaust 4 more years just to go out and fail and return.........

This is supposed to be a comedy but that's easily 1 of the most depressing thing I've seen on any drama.

It bothers me that they didn't stay in contact with each other between season 4 and 5. I guess it was done so that when they were explaining to each other what happened it's an easy way to explain to the audience too but I didn't like it. I'll find it very frustrating if the group haven't stayed in touch between the finale and the movie. The cast manage to speak to each other often so it's weird if the characters who consider each other family don't.

I don't know, post high school/college, I have to make plans to see old friends, which takes much more effort than just seeing them every day on account of being in the same place. People get busy with work/families and it gets harder and harder to maintain friendships.

So with the group doing different things (Jeff went back to law, Britta was a bartender, Annie a pharma rep, Abed and Troy making commercials, Shirley running her business) it's not totally out of the question that they hadn't all gathered again until they all went back to Greendale

I'm not even saying they should have seen each other in person. They didn't call or text? They spend time together outside of school plenty of times in the show but between seasons they just cut off all communication.

Probably did so for a few weeks… and then just stopped… just like ins real life.

It’s not a sad thing; It’s being low maintenance. It’s just like one of the things one of my best friends said about our friendship: “It doesn’t matter that much that we don’t always talk, but when we do, it’s like we just picked up from where we left off.”

Exexpt for Troy and Abed, they didn't hang over summer or winter breaks during any season

What? Troy, Abed, and Annie still live together the whole time. That's asich contact as possible. The rest seemed like they stayed in vauge contact but didn't disclose the more painful things and didn't have a group hangout.

Example; Annie knows Britta does belly shots at her bar. She doesn't know it's only on Tummy Tuesdays

I'm certain Jeff didn't want to tell his best friends that he was failing at his career. Same with sharing your husband has left you.

It’s because Greendale is purgatory.

I really like it when Jeff beats Alan with his clip-on tie though

Idk maybe you're overthinking it. It's a joke. Those characters are flawed and it makes it funny.

I didnt find it sad at all tbh, since I felt it was very forced just for the sake of having the group back together again.

Or as Abed would say, I’ve been spending so much time with computers, your tears are just ones and zeroes to me.

If that's sad, what are the last few episodes of season 6 lmao

True. I found Repilot a really bitter note to begin Harmon’s return on. Kind of makes me wish the show had ended on an alternate Dan Harmon run Season 4.

But hey, it’s not that bad. At least the finale shows that (most of them) can move on from Greendale after all. It’s one of the few times newer material comes along and actually makes bad stuff less bad.

I cannot relate at all. I love this episode. It's called repilot for a reason, and it follows the beats of the 1st pilot to set up everyone coming back to Greendale. If their lives were great, and they had the great careers like the end of S6, they wouldn't come back. It's just necessary. I can't imagine a better way to come back from S4. I'm so glad they didn't do any "it was a dream/darkest timeline" stuff. I think it's very realistic.

I also love the episode cus it's so funny. So many good one liners. I remember texting my friend that it's only 2 minutes in and it's funny again (Jeff and his whisky).

(Also Troy Abed and Annie all still lived together. I think ppl are forgetting that. Living with your best friends is still great even if your job sucks).

It's a meta commentary... The world is dark and harsh and pulls us apart; but by choosing to be with those we care about and working to improve ourselves, we can find happiness and fulfillment.

I think season 5 and 6 are pretty dark and doubled-down on the cynicism but never got back to the charm of seasons 1-3. After the horrible gas leak year, the show lost…something (in addition to the cast)…which makes it kind of hard to watch. It’s like the remaking characters became cynical dicks to each other and bickered a lot.

Am I missing something? Only Jeff goes out and fails. The others never left Greendale

No. They all graduated, screwed up, and reenrolled with new majors.
