Advice on my DJ Setup

Question

Hey everyone, was wondering if I could get some advice on this.

I'm getting an SP 404 MKII for Christmas. I'm an adult so it's not a surprise because I basically bought it for myself and my mom is giving me half the price of it for Christmas, still exciting though lol.

Anywho, I wanted to get one because I want to learn the resampling workflow and make beats to scratch over.

My gear is 2 x Reloop 7000s and a Rane 70. The 70 is a 2 channel mixer. I was thinking id do:

Deck 1 ---> Mixer <--- SP <--- Deck 2

That way I can sample records on deck 2, make a beat with the SP, then play the SP through channel 2 on the mixer and scratch with deck 1.

Was wondering if this would be a good way to do it or if someone has a better suggestion. Maybe this won't even work because I haven't tried it yet.

Thanks for the help everyone!

You can definitely do that. That is how I sample records. I don’t put the SP back into the mixer but you definitely could. If you want to scratch over your beats I think this is a good way to do it.

Sweet. Thanks for the input.

I'd like to ask one more question. If I'm using control vinyl sometimes, can I have the control vinyl playing on the table, run that sound through the SP, into the mixer, and have it be picked up by serato?

My biggest thing is I'm trying to play how I can keep the SP connected to my setup at all times even when I'm not using it. I feel it would be a pain having to constantly disconnect it but since the mixer only has 2 channels I would need to always have a player running through it.

I’m honestly not very familiar with dj software and I don’t have control vinyl. but I don’t see why that wouldn’t work. What you might want to do is connect the SP to your laptop via usb. Then you would be able to sample from serato. I’d have to test it, but you should also be able to use the SPs output in serato. That way you could have it plugged in at all times, and free up the other input on your mixer

Ah nice I didn't know that I'll have a look once I actually get the device. Thanks so much!

Why not use the session in and out on the 70? You’d just have to control the SP return volume via the session volume knob instead of channel 2, but this way you could still use your setup traditionally and bypass the SP completely whenever you want.

I don’t have a 70, but checked out the manual and seems like this configuration would work with some workflow considerations, like making sure deck 2 is muted when you only want to sample from deck 1 via the session out.

You're the best. I've only got the mixer a little while ago, upgraded to turntables after a few years of using a controller. I have 0 clue about all the connectivity on the 70 because I'm a home DJ and don't really need it for that specifically.

This is also my first time every having the gear to try something like this.

How is session in/out typically used? Does session out just play the same audio that the main output plays?

From what I saw in the manual, “session out” plays the program mix (presumably from channel 1 and 2, but not sure if mic is also sent) pre-booth and master volume control, and “session in” is just like a third channel input. With the way the SP is set up in this suggested configuration, the session in/out would give you similar capabilities as an FX send/return that is limited to the master channel. Not really sure if it was intended to be used like a send/return as I described though. It might just be more for daisy chaining multiple mixers if you’re low on channels.
