nothing (my first poem, criticism appreciated <3)

Workshop

What makes a simple thing simple

And touches your heart like a ray

The sunlight that shines in the morning

The quiet that closes the day

Why do we marvel at babies

At seeds in the spring and the fall

The promise of something amazing

Existing as nothing at all

When I was a blank sheet of paper

And people regarded me well

My figure was flat as a chalkboard

My eyes were as shiny as shells

But now I’ve come covered with scribbles

And maybe that makes you confused

I’m sorry for filling my nothings with things

I’m sorry if that’s hurting you

Remember when I was your nothing

Your spring and your summer and fall

I wonder if you can still love me the same

As when I was your nothing at all
