Woe is Me

Workshop

"You might want to try a second version of this using a formal structure like two quatrains or even a sonnet. The advantage of a formal structure is that it forces you away from direct personal statements which are hard to make work in poetry. All personal statements translate into I hurt. All objective statements translate into I see a tree. But poetry as medium for communicating our inner life has learned how to transform the objective into the personal; tell me what you see and I can tell you what you feel with an extraordinary degree of granularity. It's been far less successful in translating the personal into the objective, which is why your poem lacks the resonance and coherence a poem needs. "
