I worked in retail for ten years, destroyed Christmas, especially musically. Went 16 years without a tree until a friend bought one and let herself in to decorate the lounge.

Same exact reason I hate it. And the music is absolutely inescapable. I don't watch TV or listen to the radio and still end up hearing some at some point
Classic fm do a countdown to December 1st and playing carols, I do a countdown to not listening again for five weeks. The opening bars of Paul McCartney wonderful Christmas time is like the nails down the blackboard scene in Jaws to me.
Brings back memories of when I worked in morrisons before Christmas, I had Christmas songs and the till beeping in my head for weeks after...
It's mentally scarring. Why would anyone want to go into a shop and hear the same 5 songs as every other shop they have been in all month, and the mental distress on the poor staff......
The music is the worst - I insist on playing "Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis" as my Christmas antidote song

Christmas is fine.
Spending time with friends/family is good.
Giving and receiving thoughtful gifts is good.
Having Christmas start in September and getting more and more in your face for 3 MONTHS is soul destroying especially when you work in retail.
Why do you hate it?
I'm not the biggest fan but I don't hate it.
I hate the aesthetic, the traditions are staid and the gift giving is so mercenary. That and our family always fights if under the same roof for that long. There's nothing there for me besides the time off work
A great thing about not being into Christmas is just working through the Christmas holidays, instead of using leave.
Work from home and you're basically getting paid to have 1-2 weeks off. And you don't need to travel during the worst travelling days of the year.
Annoyingly my employer shuts down for the days between Christmas and new year.. but they take it out of our annual leave allowance.
Same here - but we get to spend a day making charity hampers on the 23rd so ho ho ho
So celebrate it alone and do all your favourite things. Start your own traditions and use the money you would spend on presents to treat yourself.
Not a million miles off what I intend to do, the issue then is my family start complaining that I ruin Christmas by not being there (if I had kids or a partner it might be different - but I don't so I remain Scrooge)
Don't be such a grinch.
Congratulations, you're part of the problem
Not trying to steal Christmas - I'm more of a scrooge (besides the money grubbing, I am more than happy to fritter away my pittance)
My friend works in multiple retail places, he's been dealing with Xmas stock since August.

Can understand hating christmas. I had a funeral on Christmas eve once, think the family from then on didn't like Christmas
My grandpa passed on New Year's Eve years ago- that Christmas was difficult but at least we got to speak to him and say farewell. Hard to be jolly in the circumstances, I'd rather Christmas was more about giving and caring than the saccharine excess that's presented.
Sorry for your loss and, at the risk of being hypocritical, I hope you enjoy your Christmas
My dad was cremated Christmas Eve. Hasn't been the same since.
