I know that I have read that in most pre-or early-19th century small burying grounds, headstones were not put in neat rows, but often in family groups, and that these markers were moved into neat, straight lines when the lawn mower was invented. But I can't find a citation for this! Has anyone else read this? If so, can you point me in the direction of a source?
So I started this job on the wrong foot. I was all enthusiastic, they told me it was a full time permanent position that is grant funded for two years and then it would segue into being paid by the county, and that the position had full benefits. I quit my job and when I went to sign the papers, they announced it had no benefits. After I produced documentation that benefits had been promised, they gave me more money for insurance. No apology or explanation. They were appalled that I objected. Later they did not extend the position, but the community funded it.
Anyway, as one might expect, I am not liked by the admin. It's a really poorly organized place - lots of meetings but no basic proce
And let me tell you right now, it NEVER STOPS. My kid is almost 21 years old. She keeps coming in - the rare times she does more than mumble to me - to ask medical advice. Day after day. She has headaches, she has jaw aches, she has back ache, she has something every day. I pay for her medical insurance. She has free healthcare at university, which I'm paying for. Now she's home for summer and every single damn day it's a health complaint. I've sent her to the dentist, she has an appointment at the neurologist, I've offered to take her to urgent care, primary care physician, etc. etc. I AM NOT A PHYSICIAN OR A HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONAL. THERE IS NOTHING I CAN DO. I've never had the money to go
Don’t get me wrong — it’s way better than it used to be. I remember when you had to re-enter piles of info they already had. I’ve done it the past two years with no issues.
But this year? Total chaos. My daughter filled out her part (and is honest about her bank balance, even though that cost her a ton of aid last year; apparently if you spend all your money, they give you more aid). Then I fill out mine, and… I only get asked a few questions. She gets her award notice, but she can see that I didn’t answer a bunch of sections — like the ones about assets, bank accounts, etc.
So I redo it. Same result. I use FAFSA’s chat — super unhelpful — they tell me I should’ve gotten an email. No email
I used my AncestryDNA data, and my report is peppered with "Likely miscall if from Ancestry data." Ancestry says they're not trying to answer medical questions. Is there a kit I could get that would work?
So, I developed terrible pain in my lower back, around the spine about a year ago. It got so bad I went to urgent care. I didn't do anything about it, because I was dealing with breast cancer as well. I told my PCP at my physical and she just shrugged. I had a bone density scan for the cancer treatment and I'm a little soft.
I've had a lot pain, in the morning especially, or when I bend over. I've tried a lot of things for the pain and for the bone density. Strength training, weight bearing exercises - walking/jogging/jumping rope, yoga, tai chi, chi gung, hip mobility stretches (these helped a lot). But I was still in pain.
So I saw some videos that said the vibration plate was helpful.
there is actually a cave in front of the book, and I know that usually you get an exit from another cave, but I can't find it! This cave and book aren't on any map I've seen on the internet. Any ideas?
So I'm reading Peace Talks, about half way in, and once again everybody is down on Harry. These fellow wizards he's fought with and saved just assume the worst and jump to pointing weapons at him. It sucks.
Harry does not deserve this!
I would be your friend, Harry!
This is just a mid-book rant.
So, I'm working in my second position as a "Lone Arranger" in a public library. It's a role I've held in a historical society for many years. I've also worked in special collections in universities.
I think I'm ready to say that the lone arranger role really doesn't work in a public library. I know there are plenty of public libraries with special collections departments of more than one staff member, and I'm assuming they work. But my experiences with being a single person archivist is turning out to be a challenge.
The other staff seem to not support the position or the whole concept of primary source materials. The ones who do support archival work, and often pursued the topic in their
So, I work in a public library. Every few months, the director will visit our branch, which I guess is good, since I've worked in places where you never see much less speak to the director.
But one time she brought some stickers and passed them out, saying this was a gift to express appreciation to the staff. No raises for years, but here's a sticker.
I've never had a supervisor give me a sticker, since I'm a grown-ass woman. Everyone else seemed so pleased. Were they just pretending to be pleased? Or maybe the whole world has become to infantilized that they actually love getting stickers?
Is this normal? I'm not exactly neurotypical, and I'm increasingly feeling like there's something
Listening to the audiobooks of Pern (the original trilogy and the harper hall). I could swear I read a story where Menolly has sex with Master Robinton, but I don't see it listed anywhere. They were on a boat and Beauty goes into heat. But all of the wikis and summaries say it didn't happen. Did I imagine this?
So I completed the Vault of the Roots, I even got the "roots for meaning" achievement. Then the game crashed, and the game doesn't seem to know I have completed it. I have to do it again.
I HATED IT. I hate jumping. It was tedious and annoying. Is it possible to petition to have my account credited with doing the quest? I mean, can the admins do that?
So I'm doing a reread, and am thinking I should add shelves in my Goodreads log for "Archivists," "Librarians," since it's interesting to see the differing depictions of people in my field.
Several of the Rivers books have significant notes about both. Sometimes good, i.e. how important they are, sometimes bad, i.e. archivists as untechnical historians and librarians as stern shushers wearing half-moon reading glasses. But I didn't make notes of which books had a lot of librarian or archivist descriptions. Does anyone else remember?
I've got False Value (NY Public Library practitioners) and Rare and Cunning Devices.
Is anyone else really interested in the development of new technologies? I've read IPB and Icehome and the first book of IPC and am so glad that they're starting to work with fiber, clay, and making plans for other things.
Honestly, I'm surprised it's taken so long! I would have thought that Harlow, Murdock, and Devi would have spurred on more development. It kills me that they're not even stone age - they use shaped bone for spear points, although the islanders mentioned using stone spear points.
I keep yelling at Bridget "add grog to that clay!" "burnish it when it's leather hard!" And now I am dying for someone to PLEASE make lime (just cook those sea shells then add water) so they can
