Gary Upton just cooked up a C-extension for me. I have some down time for the summer so I want to have some excerpts in my back pockets to let em’ rip on this new extension.
Any fav’s?

Hey all,
I just got finished with my conservatory application cycle and committed to University of Maryland's Music School on a Full Ride but feel somewhat disappointed.
For context, I'm a fifths tuning bassist. My teacher (who happens to be a cellist/bassist) is a phenomenal pedagogue and I don't feel like I would have gotten nearly as far if I didn't have her. Moreover, I've been playing for about six years have made, in my opinion, tremendous strides in my technique. I've played both Bottesini concertos and have made my way through the second cello suite; however, I'm a fifths tuning bassist so my technique is somewhat unconventional.
When it came time for me to apply to conservatori
Way back in October I sent in my ED application to Columbia. At this time I was told by guidance counselors, admissions officers, and even the office of the President that the commotion that occurred last year would subside and that the campus gates would open.
I was admitted Dec. 18th and was over the moon. Now, the situation has been aggravated so seemingly the nth power. Furthermore, the actions of the current Columbia administration have been nothing short than embarrassing; I feel disturbed by the idea of sending money to an institution that so readily takes the ready position to what is the gross phallus of fascism.
Relating to the matter of fact that Columbia is any ivy league
Hey everyone,
I’ve been dating my (M27) girlfriend (F24) for about two years and it’s been great. It is easily the best relationship I’ve ever been in and would even say that she’s one of the only people I’ve ever met who I’ve really loved. But, in the past three months I’ve been growing to have doubts.
Back in December my cousin got diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. Her Husband has been heartbroken but been there for her every step of the way and has really been a commendable guy. At the same time I’ve been taking care of my girlfriend for the past two weeks as she’s had a bad case Covid. I know this is a hypothetical and all but I’m fairly certain that my girlfriend wouldn’t care for me
Got in with a 3.42 UW GPA and no 5’s on AP’s. Stay optimistic 👍
Just looking for some advice for undergrad.
Hey all,
This semester I’m taking a composition elective. Our first project is to write a sonata movement for our major instrument. I want to write in solo tuning since I prefer the warmth of it. However, I think I’m a tad confused about how to write for solo tuning. I know the Bottesini is written in A minor for solo tuning and we transpose to B but for the score how does the composer reconcile this with the orchestra?
Can anyone explain in laymen’s terms how solo tuning works and how the accompaniment is composed?
Thanks,
I’m serious.
My family is well off enough that I don’t qualify for any aid at all. Hurray! No!
My father paid for college all on his own in the early 70s, it cost him a couple hundred dollars and he paid it off working as a librarian at his school and being a camp counselor in the summer. He believes that I can do the same and should pay for college all on my own, which is noble; however, the way the tuition system is designed is that it’s supposed to be more costly for affluent people and proportionally costly for less affluent people.
I can’t afford college, I’ll drown in student loans.
And the idea of “need” in need based aid has a scope I disagree with.
I can develop a bullet pro
I’m done applying to PC. Auditions were successful. Now I need to look to the future as I plan to audition at conservatory this next year. Please let me know if this repertoire list is too esoteric for what juries are looking for.
Baroque Piece: Marin Marais Sonate ou Caprice in D minor
Solo Pieces: Serge Koussevitzky Concerto No. 1 in E minor mvt 3 + Sam Suggs Otello Variations in Ab major
Orchestral Excerpts: Beethoven 9 Symphony Recits + Rossini Barber di Siviglia Overture
I'm part of a men's club that has been constructing our own Octuple Scull for the past ~7 months or so. It is seaworthy, and we're planning on launching on July 1st. However, I have my brother's July 4th party I want to be back in NYC for. How long could we estimate it would take to go there and back?
How much trouble could I possibly get in, if my sister were to apply to a school like Vanderbilt Blair or Northwestern Bienen and I were to audition in her place. She doesn't play an instrument, but wants to go to these universities for various reasons. We are fraternal twins and I have been playing french horn for years and think I could get in if it wasn't been for the fact I've already committed to play Lacrosse at a college in Fall 2026.
I love her and would be willing to risk it. Realistically, if I get caught then what is the worst thing that could happen.
Hey all,
So I was admitted to both Brown and Columbia as a 1st year. I'm planning on studying Philosophy but also passionate about making movies and smoking weed. My family lives in Manhattan and I would have a way better program at Columbia with the core, and would be able to work in film production. However, I like how laid back Brown is, and at this point Columbia seems scarier and scarier and more intense and more intense.
I understand that Sears’s already replied to this in “Is the Brain a Computer Program.” But responding to a more complex question “is there anything that makes human cognition impossible to replicate?” Seems a little more existentially daunting.
Any thoughts?
