I’ve been running a few things bare metal on my OptiPlex, and recently I installed Proxmox on another server. I would like to move everything from the OptiPlex to a VM on Proxmox so that everything stays exactly the same. Is this possible? (Ubuntu Linux)

I’ve made a few posts trying to find the best budget home server but every time I think I’ve got a good deal it’s usually overpriced or just crappy hardware. My plan is to mainly run some Minecraft servers for my friends. I currently have an optiplex 7040 TFF and it works pretty well but it can only run one server at a time. My budget is $600AUD. Hey everyone! I’m new to homelabbing and after about 4 months of working on my setup (networking is done), I want to focus on building a dedicated server from scratch (or upgrading a machine) that can reliably run:

• 5–10 modded Minecraft servers (with decent player counts)
• Other game servers
• Various homelab services (VMs, reverse proxy, backups, etc.)

I’m struggling to decide on the right parts — especially CPU, RAM, and storage — that will handle lots of Minecraft instances comfortably.

What I’m looking for help with:

Recommended CPU / platform for heavy multi-instance workloads
How much RAM I realistically need
Best storage setup (NVMe, SATA, HDD?

Hello! I’m looking to make (or buy) a rack-mounted server to host some modded Minecraft servers and a few other services. I need a lot of compute power and RAM.

My server rack is in the same room I sleep in, so I’d like it to be as quiet as possible. I’m very new to this—right now I’m only running a standard Minecraft server on an old OptiPlex.
