2 stripe white belt closing in on 10 months of training.

I’ve been putting in work. I’m averaging 4 sometimes 5 classes a week. I’m attending seminars that are available around my area, and am trying hard to get better. Next Saturday I’m going to compete in my first Jiu Jitsu competition. I wanted to ask y’all some questions I had.

How do I avoid those nerves and the adrenaline dump I hear so much about?

Is it normal to think I might freeze up and forget everything I’ve been working on?

What mindset should I be have going in? I realize it’s a local tournament it’s not worlds...

Those are the easy ones I can think of. I guess the big thing is that I’m a little nervous about embarrassi

Hey all.

Been training for 9 months and I’m a 2 stripe white beltch. Initially when I started I struggled with technique. Got smeshed during rounds... pretty much repeatedly. During the beginning months I definitely struggled, with mat time and reps I slowed down stopped spazzing (for the most part) and started trying to rely on technique.

I’m starting to find out what works for me and what doesn’t. I’m drilling my weak side.. showing up to class on average 4 days a week plus open mat on weekends. Recently however I feel like I’m getting no where, I feel like I’m stuck. I do know know it’s part of it, and I only get better by showing up. How do you all deal with the mental side of days/w

Locked up a triangle last week during a round... partner tried to stack me. Finished it... but since then my lower back has been hurting. Seems like it’s my sacrum or L5 maybe off to the side in the lumbar muscles. I’m stretching a lot and doing decompression. Any core strength or body weight stuff other than planks that help??

I posted earlier this week about what to do when you just feel like you suck. A lot of guys/girls suggested to just go back to class the next day so I did. The class after I struggled was pretty solid I had some good things happen during live rounds. Today’s class however I experienced my first tidal wave of emotion.

We have some guys competing in a competition this weekend so our instructor has been doing some positional sparring. Long story short I finished 2 armbars and a pile choke. It’s the first time I tapped anyone. I almost wanted to cry, because I’ve been pouring my soul day in and day out training. Been working my ass off outside of class 6 days a week with cardio trying to get pr

Going on 3 and a half months of training 4-5 days a week.. not really burnt out or anything like that. Just hitting that wall where I feel like I’m not getting anywhere with training. Personally it’s not coming naturally. How did you or do you deal with those days where you just feel like you suck at this?

So we have a local competition in a month. A lot of my training partners have been telling me I should really try competing.

I’m only 3 months into training. I do go to class 5 days a week and I do put in the work getting quality rounds in after class. I’m the new guy in class who is consistent on showing up. We’ve had a few new people sign up for class since I’ve started but I don’t see a whole lot of them. I’m doing well on learning technique and really am being a sponge and taking this seriously. While rolling I mainly get try to survive right now. I mix it up and roll with higher belts but mainly it’s been 2-3 stripe white belts. I haven’t got a submission yet but I’m not really focuse

Hey guys so I’m 3 months into training Bjj and I’ve tried to be a sponge when working on takedowns. I’m taking 2 days of Judo a week which I have never done before and I am learning throws and trips decently. However I find myself being very timid while standing while rolling or positional sparring.

When I was younger and wrestling I definitely had a super aggressive style and would take high risk shots or go for awkward throws without thinking much. Fast forward until now and I really have a much more relaxed style of stand up. I’ll try to explain in some detail what I’m doing.

I do try to get a reaction from my opponent. I’ll push and pull with my grips to set up a high single or ankle

Just wanted some advice on how to start passing while in someone’s closed guard. I’m working on defending attacks and regaining posture, but I find myself drawing a blank on how to not get stuck here.

Should I be trying to stand back up in my base and then working on things like a toreando or a bullfighter pass. That’s where my mind goes at least since I know those passes. Mainly what should I be thinking about and doing while still in closed guard.

One suggestion I was shown but I still haven’t done more then one time is actually reaching back and breaking the closed guard and then stack/pressure passing. Just a tough one to pull off for me. Just wanted some advice on what you all do and

Almost 2 months in and I’ve asked advice on how to slow down during drills, and I’m starting to implement some of the advice you guys have offered.

Basically I’m drilling too fast still.. despite trying to slow down. This is the second week in a row where my instructor has singled me out for going too fast. I of course am taking it on the chin and trying my best to use it as fuel to be better. Just on the struggle bus lately with falling back into moving too quick.

I understand where he’s coming from for sure I get that moving too quick I miss technique. I can make excuses for myself but I realize they are all bullshit, and the critique is coming from a good place.

I am trying to figur

I probably have ADD and also I’m naturally high strung. I tend to over react a lot but I’m aware of it and have been trying to figure ways to slow my thinking down. I keep getting corrected by the coach to slow down and it’s discouraging. Is there anyone out there that has some of these traits?

What do you guys do to slow yourself down to get the technique down? It’s so much easier said than done.. just want some insight on how not to suck so bad.

Just wanted some insight on how bad others did when they were brand new.

I’m a month into starting training. I’m going 4 times a week. I understand seeing the movements when drilling it’s just my body doesn’t respond like I want it to if that makes sense.. I get the whole everyone sucks thing in the beginning. I’m hoping with time the movements and transitions become fluid I’m sure they will with practice.. wanted to see how you guys/girls did starting out. The good ,the bad, and the ugly.

Have some questions I wanted to ask guys/girls who have been in the same situation I am in.

Just to give some context I’m in a very good gym, very solid black belt instructor and overall great community. I’m 1 month in and I’m obviously a fresh no stripe white belt.

Question 1: how long were you all into taking class and rolling before you started setting up and attacking with submissions?

I’ve read enough and have used my spider senses to figure I’m one of the few fresh white belts, so I don’t beat myself up too much when rolling and constantly tapping... don’t have issues with that just wanted to know how long in before it made sense to you guys and you started building an offense.

Wanted to ask for anyone else’s opinion on recovery after training. I’m new to Jiu Jitsu so I’m still getting used to everything. However for work I’m doing yard care 4 days a week so I’m constantly on my feet. I am fairly knowledgeable on what to do. I’m decompressing my back with an inversion table. I foam roll and have a softball sized ball I use for trigger points. I’m stretching a lot daily after work before and after class. Just wanted any other tips anyone uses that helps with muscle soreness
