If you know there's a trap, what does the DM prefer?

Need Advice: Encounters & Adventures

I was playing through the Acquisitions Incorporated module and thought of this question when doing a dungeon crawl. Sometimes in DND, it is very obvious there is a trap from the description of a location. As a PC, you may miss your perception or investigation check to find it. However, as a player, you know the trap is there.

As a DM, do you prefer players then trying a million checks to find the trap they know is there or proceed as if they didn't know it was there?

My wife gave birth to our twins girls recently and we are kind of stuck as homebodies as winter approaches. The days and nights have been really long and we are looking for something light hearted to watch. Recently we've watched Uncle Buck and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. It doesn't have to only be a comedy but should be something easy to follow and be a generally uplifting movie. Any ideas are really appreciated!

Cube of Force Shenanigans

Need Advice: Other

Like the title says, I have some players who are wanting to pull some shenanigans with the Cube of Force that one of them is attuned to.

We ended our last session with them just about to start an encounter where the enemy has opened a vortex that is basically a black hole. As fight goes on and it is unaddressed, the vortex will grow and the pull of it will be stronger. So one of them has a cube of force and the spell mage hand.

My question is: could the player use mage hand to activate the cube of force?

Reading through the cube of force description, I don't read it as explicitly prohibiting this but it also seems a bit out there. I'm leaning to yes because it is a creative way to solve t

Hi Everyone, I know the Grito has been cancelled this year and that the Indepence Day Parade is scheduled for this weekend. But what are people expecting the celebrations to actually be? The last couple of years it has been difficult to get in or out of downtown in the evening on the weekend because the freeways are effectively shut down. I'm trying to gauge of it is worth trying to go to the loop this year to do other things (I have out of towers visiting this weekend).

So I occasionally go to Texas and get tortillas from HEB. They are so good to me that i always bring back a pack.

That brings me to my ask, does anyone have recommendations for tortillas here? I've lived in the city for 6 years and have not found anything to scratch this HEB tortilla itch. Please help!

I currently have a pixel 5 which has served me pretty well for its life. However, the battery life is starting to take a dive and it has issues with connecting to the Internet when I'm not on wifi. So, I'm in the market for a new phone.

What are your thoughts on the Pixel 9? Is it a worthy upgrade? Have they solved the Internet connection issues? Would it be better to change to an iPhone when the new one comes out in October?

Any feedback is really appreciated! I know it just came out today but I know this subreddit goes deep in the paint on this stuff.

Virtual Box of Doom

Need Advice: Other

At the end of my last session, one of my players took some pretty wrecked actions. He accused a NPC of being a werewolf while alone in a room with the guy. The player proceeded to point an arrow at him and threaten him. The player is right, the guy is a werewolf and the player is level 3 ranger....

The NPC he accused is a pretty chill dude but I'm thinking that rolling a dice to determine if he is offended enough to attack would be fun for the all the players. We play virtually and I was hoping we could do a virtual D20 that would capture the thrill of a box of doom in person.

Anyone have any websites to use where everyone could see the roll at the same time?

Currently I have a nose 700 Soundbar and bass module. It is pretty good but I'm looking to complete the set with the satelite speakers. Because of the space, I can't have the satelite speakers behind me and they would instead be on my side. Would it still be worth getting the satelite speakers? I am wanting to get that next level of sound quality and want to double check this with experts before dropping that type of money.

I just finished watching Past Lives last night and it's been bouncing around in my head since then. There was so much to the movie and for a directorial debut, wow, Celine Song really nailed it. There are a million things I could talk about from the movie but I really want to talk about the ending because it was left somewhat ambiguous. I love movies where they leave you room for interpretation and it feels like that to me.

!My question is, what do you think Nora was feeling that made her cry?!<

!While I was initially sitting with it, I was thinking it was because she clearly love Haesung and wanted to be with him but as I've sat with it I think she was crying because she was emotionally

I've been playing DND for a while and finally convinces my brother's to play with me this year. At the start, I made their characters for them and they were happy with it. After completing the main mission they have decided they wanted to run a new campaign with new characters they created. So we had a session where we just talked about character ideas. One of them wanted to play a fighter that specializes in archery and another wanted to play a ranger.

Today it came to a head when they sent me character sheets and they were super similar in concept except one rolled very well on their ability scores (ranger) and the other rolled more average (fighter). The fighter called me and said they

I'm looking for a new keyboard and wanting to change to an Alice keyboard setup. I have done some research but this keyboard stuff is pretty confusing to me. I don't anticipate keyboard configuration to become any sort of hobby for me and is simply to improve my work set up. I am at my desk all day typing and think a more ergonomic setup via an Alice keyboard would be a step in the right direction. I am in the US. My budget is up to about $150 or so. The twokeyboards that I have looked at up to now are the Keychron V10 QMK Custom Mechanical Keyboard and the Logitech K860 Wireless Keyboard. I'm not sure of one would really be better than the other and would love the opinion of this community.

I am creating a level 9 character bard for a one shot I have coming up and have taken the resilient feat at level 8 and grabbed an Amulet of Health. Would my constitution then be 20 because of the combo? I wanted to improve my constitution because I have a number of concentration spells. I want to make sure I can maintain them by passing the con save after being hit.

I'm going to my first White Sox game today which also happens to be one of their free shirt giveaway days. I don't want to show up too early and bake in the sun, but don't want to miss my chance at free stuff!

How early should I go to get a shirt if it is only for the first 10,000 who get in?

Edit: I got in just in time to get a shirt! They were opening the last boxes at my gate when I got in.

I have a friend who is going to get their citizenship in the US and am planning a party to celebrate. One of the games I want to play at the party is to name the movie based on it's description and the category will be movies that epitomize America. Here are some of the movies I have already:

  • A Few Good Men
  • Independence Day
  • All the President's Men
  • Forest Gump
  • Saving Private Ryan
  • Untouchables
  • Top Gun
  • American Gangster
  • There Will be Blood
  • Lincoln

Any other ideas that really are quintessentially American?

Edit: Wow! Thank you all so much for the helpful suggestions! I've definitely got a lot to add to my list!

I'm going to run a DND 5E campaign with my siblings. This is the first time any of them have ever played but i have DM'd and written campaigns before. I'm really excited to play but I'm a bit nervous to give them a bad taste of a game i love. What are some suggestions to make it run smoother and be a fun time for all?

Some additional facts that may be helpful: -all adults -playing remotely -one of my siblings doesn't really like nerdy stuff and is doing this just for me
