I have a hard disk without any crucial data on it and was looking into if it's still healthy enough to use.

I did a SMART extended self-test. SMART attribute 187, "Reported Uncorrectable Errors", has raw_value 137907104973243, which seems like a big problem. The normalized value is 100 and the threshold for failure is is <= 0, so smartctl is not flagging it as an issue.

According to various online resources, like Backblaze, this attribute is a good predictor for imminent drive failure. They're talking about values between 1 and 120. (Source: https://www.backblaze.com/blog/hard-drive-smart-stats/).

Is this drive broken? Is the SMAR

My Garmin Forerunner 955 always has wildly incorrect elevation profiles for my runs. How can I disable the pressure-based altitude measurement and use GPS only?

My runs are always out and back along a canal with at most one bridge crossing, stopping at the exact same spot as I started (within 1 meter). This makes it easy to check the elevation profile: it should be mostly flat, any bridge should stand out, the elevation profile should be mirrored at the point I turned around, and the start and end should be at the same elevation. It is never even remotely accurate. Last week it showed a 100 meter elevation difference between start and end (at the exact same spot). Yesterday it showed me cli

Games I enjoyed in the past:

  • Half-Life: Probably my favorite. I've finished the entire series several times (1, OpFor, Blue Shift, 2, 2:1, 2:2). Recently enjoyed Black Mesa as well (new Xen is beautiful!). I didn't play Alyx yet because I want to play it as it's meant (VR).
  • Bioshock: I've played the first one several times (when remastered came out) and also enjoyed 2 and Infinite a lot. I think I've listened to every single audio diary on my first playthrough.
  • Doom: I really enjoyed Doom 3, I think I read every single PDA, listened to all audio logs, and found all (ok, most) locker codes on my first playthrough. When Doom Eternal came out, I replayed Doom 1, 2, 3 and 2016 before cont

Anyone already have some experience in the robot finishing faster or cleaning better with a different room layout?

For example, at the moment, the robot cleans the space between my sofa and window by constantly bouncing between wall and sofa. Clean 2 feet, turn, clean 2 feet, turn, ... Going length-wise along the wall would be much faster, and I think would miss less spots since it doesn't mop perfectly while turning. Other parts of the room are going in the fastest orientation.

Another example is door openings. Manoeuvering around doors and door openings takes a lot of time, and again I think means it's cleaning is not done as well as it could. Is it best to make the door part of the room

Is there a way to use a different proxy/VPN exit node for each tab or container?

More and more VPN providers have browser extensions to easily switching proxy while browsing. Some (I'm following the rules by not naming) allow assigning a specific proxy to a Firefox container.

I'd like to automate this switching by having a different, random proxy per browser tab, or browser container.

Does it exist?

I read Mozilla VPN's Firefox extension now allows assigning different proxies to different containers. I'd like to go one step further: opening containers with a randomly assigned proxy.

I use the extension "Temporary Containers" to limit tracking across tabs and domains. Every time I click a link that leaves the website's domain, it gets opened in a newly generated container that doesn't share anything with the original website. Every time I middle-click a link it gets opened in a newly generated container even if the link is for the same domain. This is great, and similar in concept to the "Total Cookie Protection" recently introduced. But it still allows tracking by IP address. I'd like

I have very smelly sweat, so my workout clothes smell quite bad.

If I wash my synthetic workout clothes, even after being in the hamper for a few days, they come out smelling fine.

If I wash some regular cotton T-shirts together with the workout clothes, or the workout clothes are partially cotton, a bad smell transfers to/remains in the cotton clothes. The cotton clothes come out smelling worse than when they went in.

I prefer to run full loads of laundry, to help the environment. Is the only solution to always wash workout clothes separately (just a few items per week), or is there another solution?

I am looking for information of the climate impact of the manufacturing and installation of air-source heat pumps.

Why? I bought a new apartment, and it has a gas boiler for heating and hot water. I would like to replace it with an air-source heat pump if that would be more climate and environment friendly. (Ground-source is unfortunately not possible here.)

Why wouldn't it be? The apartment will already use very little energy:

  • It has only 65m² / 700sq ft of heated space
  • Great insulation
  • Floor heating
  • Absolute maximum 3kW of heating requirement at -10°C / 14 F

Since the gas boiler is already installed, I would compare gas boiler use with heat pump use + manufacturing. The u

I have a new PC and an old screen. Everything works when I connect them as follows:

  • motherboard HDMI (female) connected to ...
  • adapter HDMI (male) to DVI-D dual link (female) connected to ...
  • cable with both ends DVI-D single link (male) connected to ...
  • the DVI-D dual link (female) input of the screen

The problem is that the signal is sometimes lost because the HDMI male plug (the metal part, the thing that's sometimes 'gold-plated', going into the HDMI port of the motherboard) is physically too short and the adapter + cable weigh the whole thing down and cause it to fall out or be plugged in at an angle, which doesn't work.

I decided to replace this with a regular HD

I am building a PC this weekend. It's an ASRock B550M Steel Legend with an AMD 5600G. I'll likely need to flash the BIOS that supports the 5600G. I have a working 3700X in another PC. Before I remove the cooler and thermal paste from the 3700X, and mess up the pre-applied thermal paste on the cooler intended for the new PC, I'd like to make sure it's needed. How can I find out the BIOS version without CPU? Is it indicated somewhere?

I'm looking at motherboards with USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (also known as USB 3.2 G2x2 or USB 20Gbps).

Some motherboards, mostly Asrock models, provide this as a header instead of an actual port. Example: Asrock H570 Phanton Gaming 4

Which cases provide a front panel I/O connector compatible with a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 header? For example, the Corsair 4000D Airflow has a front panel USB Type C port, but the manual describes it as a "USB 3.1 Type-C" connector. Will

The classic take is that an iGPU is sufficient for non-gaming use.

Then again, modern browsers and desktop environments are ever-increasingly taking advantage of hardware acceleration for compositing, render engine internals, WebGL, canvas rendering, ... I'm curious if on-board/integrated GPUs can be a limiter in such cases.

Most review sites seem to test either the F-version or the non-F-version, but not both, or focus on non-mixed workloads like Cinebench or gaming.

Are there any benchmarks comparing e.g. a 11400F and 11400 (non-F), or 11700F and 11700 (non-F) in WebXPRT, Kraken, JetStream, MotionMark, or something including Google Maps street view, or Google Earth?

I'm looking for a remote backup solution. The goal is to:

  1. have the entire backup encrypted, including metadata such as how many files there are, file names, modification timestamps, ...
  2. back up incrementally, ideally with daily/weekly/monthly snapshots each kept for some time (e.g. dailies kept for 1 week, weeklies kept for 1 month, ...)
  3. be able to restore a single file from a given point in time without downloading entire snapshots or increments and without sending any decryption keys to the remote. E.g. "give me /home/myuser/list.txt from the last snapshot before 2021-03-26"

As far as I can tell, many tools, including ZFS with zfs send, are able to do the first two. I can't
