While waiting for Waybound I'm listening to Defiance of the Fall 8 and have a silly comparison: "like a bell" appears 4 times in Dreadgod, butDotF is a bit more egregious:

"Opportunity" appears 112 times, and "missive" 37 times.

"natural treasures": 19 times

Hey folks, just wondering if anyone has run into this. I am planning to do the new firmware update on my TVS-h1688X, and it wanted me to reboot first. Now it's hanging on "Booting... Starting System", after having gotten past a hardware initialization stage. The lights are all green and solid. The QNAP is not making any noise.

This happened last time I tried to reboot the device, and last time it eventually came up after several hours so that's my plan this time too. The firmware update and reboot went just fine on my backup TS-h886 so I figured I would probably be good here too. My data is backed up, so no emergency there, this is just a tremendous annoyance so far with QNAP. If thi

I had an 8TB WD Red Pro go brown (means "warning", not error) in my TR-004U that's acting as expansion for my TS-h886 so I replaced it with a new drive. The new drive read "error", and QuTS Hero says running a SMART test on the drive in the attached expansion wasn't supported. So I don't know at this point why it was erroring. Popping the drive out and re-inserting it didn't change things.

No worries, however... to get around this I yanked an 8TB drive out of an array in my TVS-h1688X and popped this drive in it to see if I could run a test. It comes up green, with no errors, so I let that RAID 5 pool rebuild. The drive I took out of the TVS-h1688X, well, I placed that in the same slot

The answer of course is that I don't know. But there's this:

“Then I suppose I must go without.” Five white tails lashed at the air, and Elder Whisper looked from Lindon to Little Blue to Yerin as though doubting their credentials. “As I told young Lindon here, I can lead you toward one of the truths of this world: how to kill the Dreadgods.” There was a stretch of silence before Yerin audibly scoffed. She waited longer than Lindon had expected. “You a Monarch in disguise, are you?” Yerin asked. “I am old, and I have lived above the labyrinth for almost my entire life. There are secrets within that make the Monarchs tremble.”

I recommend re-reading Soulsmith's introduction of Eithan now that we have a more complete picture of just who he is. Let me give you some quotes that jumped out at me, so please read them with the E=O context in mind:

And he kept his tools neatly separated, packed efficiently into his pack. He carried very little on his person, just a halfsilver dagger, the badge, a few coins, and a— Eithan stumbled over his own feet, catching himself on the edge of a stone building. What was that in Lindon’s pocket? A transparent bead less than an inch in diameter. Not glass, but a barrier of…Forged madra? If so, it was so stable it wouldn’t dissipate for a thousand years. And seamless enou

Hey folks, I know we're all about to read Reaper ASAP, but shortly thereafter we will all be feening for the next book in the series. As that'll be months away at the earliest, I'd like to share a book I ran across that might help satisfy the cultivation/advancement itch for a while.

Heaven's Laws, by Apollos Thorne is written with a heavily Asian flavor, yet has a very accessible story that managed to draw me in pretty quickly. It focuses on two very different cultivation prodigies, Long Chao and Fairy Huifen, who meet by random chance, and follows their story as they return to her Sect and focus on advancement.

This book is pretty meh on world building as it spends most of its focus

I've begun my Bloodline reread (finally!), and in the beginning of this book we learn a few things about these folks.

The first point is that while Malice and Fury both have the best interests of the Akura in mind, they don't like each other a whole lot and had a falling out at some point. Here are a couple of quotes:

“When are you leaving?” Mercy asked. “Now.” He said it so matter-of-factly, but to Mercy it was another heavy blow in a long string. “You mean…today? You’re not even going to wait until we get home?” Fury looked down on her sadly. “Well, tonight. I wish I could wait longer, but another Monarch staying in Cradle causes all sorts of problems. Especially now.” She blinked back

We're witnessing the birth of a new Sect here, one right now that's largely composed of powerless refugees. We have a multitude of different influences that will go into it:

Jai Long, with his Path of the Stellar Spear

Jai Chen, with... whatever it is that she has

White Fox refugees, with varying knowledge of the Path of the White Fox

Lindon, with his Path of Twin Stars

Yerin, with... whatever they come up with for her new Path, which will involve Blood, Sword, and Hunger aspects

Eithan, with whatever he wants to put into it (a lot here depends on whether he freely gives out the HEPW to the new Sect)

Other refugees from SV with their own Paths

Orthos, with pure Blackflame

Possibly

So I thought I would look up references to ice in the series. Most of them have to do with Min Shuei and Wintersteel, with some coming from Mt. Samara, and so forth, but a couple are pretty interesting. Let's take a look:

Ozriel:

His will bent and tore reality—one more wound among many in the dying world—and he stepped through a hole in space. He found himself in an underground chamber that sheltered millions of local lives. And he was standing face-to-face with Ozriel. It was only afterwards that Oth’kimeth, acting in conjunction with his Presence, had reconstructed the image of the Abidan standing there in his black armor, white hair falling around his shoulders, ice-cold look on his f

Hi Folks, I've posted here before, but it's been almost three years now. After a colon resection, I was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic colon cancer, which has metastasized to my liver and lungs. So here's what happened since then (diagnosed Nov 6, 2018):

Went on CAPOX (oxaliplatin + Xeloda + Avastin) for 5 rounds. Went into full remission, CEA dropped to 7. Excellent news! However, after about 7 months and a gradually rising CEA, it was clear that the cancer was active again and I had to go back on CAPOX.

Halloween 2020, I had some insane chest pain; in the ER they found a blood clot in my lung, so blood thinners it was. However, just after getting on them and during the same hos

Looks like a LOT of bugfixes in the release notes. Kind of a scary lot of them, especially given this note: "QuTS hero does not support downgrading from h4.5.4 to h4.5.3 or earlier."

Going to upgrade my "not in production currently" NAS first.

Update: My TS-h973AX appears to have updated fine with no issues. However, this box serves solely as a repository for SnapSync backups, and does nothing else.

hey folks, so I popped a GTX1650 into my TVS-h1688X QuTS Hero NAS, and went to download the GPU driver. Of course, the old one in the app store fails. But... I go through QNAP.com, select my NAS, go to downloads/drivers and yes, there's an Nvidia driver there that looks newer. Yay!

Go to install it and I get this: Error 2021-07-26 17:43:30 --- 127.0.0.1 --- --- [App Center] Failed to start NvKernelDriver. QTS does not support this version of NvKernelDriver 4.5.4.1723.

WHY is QNAP pointing me at this driver when it clearly doesn't work. Also, I have QuTS Hero, and the log is complaining that QTS doesn't support it? I don't run QTS.

Also, I

A Wei Clan light an dreams White Fox Monarch? Possibly scary if the Path goes beyond dreams and into directly affecting reality. Illusions that are solid and can kill you. Someone who can twist your mind such that everything you experience is not real.

A Redflower Monarch? A crazy Life path... A Monarch here could probably restore the Rosegold Continent in a heartbeat. Imagine a Monarch Meira or something here, though she's more about using Life to fight with.

A Fisher Clan Monarch? I... can't even picture it.

A Hunger Monarch? Subject One. Very scary, probably about to get a lot scarier in the next book.

Any thoughts on weirdness? Path of the Last Breath? White Fox Monarch vs
