My S-Type R, when the engine isn’t up to temperature yet and cruising along at 30-40mph, the power is very on and off, not constant, the rpm gauge also wobbles and bounces between about 1.55k and 1.6k rpm. Is this normal behaviour for this engine or is it a trip to the mechanic?

Car is Jaguar S-Type R 4.2l supercharged V8. The car starts and idles well but when I am driving at about 30-40mph and maintaining a constant speed, the car feels like it is applying power intermittently rather than constant/smooth. The rpm gauge confirms this as it bounces a little between 1.55k and 1.65k rpm. Probably even less range actually. The effect is very subtle and isn’t noticed by passengers, only me. As soon as the engine is up to temperature this problem goes away.

What could this be? Thanks

I'm 25, earn well enough, UK. I've got my eyes on a 2003 S-Type R for £10k with 1 previous owner and 65k miles. My current 1.4l fiat I have repaired 100% myself and changed oil myself etc.

I know running costs is so variable but looking for some input on these. I know what to check when I view it and I'm okay with petrol costs and maybe £2000 per year in parts (I can fix many things myself as long as its not core engine/transmission/suspension.

Thanks for any input

110km, 6 nights in Arctic Sweden mid/late September

Temps:

From what I can gather from searching:

Kiruna (town) lows between +4 and -1ºC at 530m

Highest I will be camping is 1100m so I guess -2 and -7ºC and in open valleys

Gear

Yellow star: Not purchased yet
Red star: luxuries
Green star: non negotiable
Not a slow walker but I will spend hours in the morning and evening taking photos, I know that the distance in the time is realistic given that

Other options I have:

Can swap the tent to my trekking pole tent: -759g

I'd rather bring the Vango tent though

I guess I might need a warmer bag, I'm a war

Just received my Rab Ultrasphere 4.5, what drew me to it was the pack size, it's heavier than an Exped Ultra 3r or an Uberlite but the pack size is smaller than an Uberlite and double the R value. I was also pleasantly surprised it is easy enough to put back in the stuff sack. But, I opened the valve and had a look in there, the TILT is literally just tin foil in there so I'm worried about the longevity as it gets folded over and over. Does anyone have any negative experiences with TILT deteriorating over time?

2008 Fiat Grande Punto 1.4l 16v. Electric power steering. Every time I turn the car on, even if it has just been driven, the battery warning light shows and I have no power steering. Turning the car off and then on again fixes it and it stays working for the whole journey (even 200+ miles). The battery and alternator are 100% okay.

I am only having this trouble after replacing the alternator as that failed 2 weeks ago. The fan belt could do with being replaced anyway and I think the belt slipping may be causing it?

Any help appreciated.

For context:

  • In the winter I only camp for 1 night
  • I wont ever need to melt snow
  • I only need to boil water (500ml each time, twice a day) (double if I have someone with me)
  • For summer I use an MSR pocket rocket 2
  • My definition of winter is -5 and snow on the ground, if its any colder than that then I'll go to a campsite

I'm torn between an MSR Windpro 2/Kovea Spider or a Whisperlite Intl. Essentially, inverted gas stove versus white gas. I've heard many people recommend and make good arguments for both sides. I realise I wont utilise the snow melting capability and usability over multi-day trips of the whisperlite but I like the idea of refilling bottles versus collecting dozens
