Is there a simple way to turn system speakers off at a particular time (e.g. quiet time overnight) and back on again afterwards - whilst leaving any Bluetooth sound connections unaffected - so that I can connect headphones and listen to stuff at any time?

I'm using Ubuntu 22.04 on a Thinkpad, if this is relevant and am still pretty much a noob. I imagine that cron jobs may come into play here.

TIA.

A British film with a contemporary family living a pretty normal life except for occasions when they - particularly father, who maybe was involved in organised crime - would brutally murder people who came to their home (perhaps with a baseball bat) and then wrap up and dispose of the bodies. I thought that Pete Postlethwaite played the father, but evidently not. I think that the title is "XXXXX Road" or "XXXXX Street" or similar.

I am trying to remember the name of a BBC TV series from the late '70s or '80s which was composed of Pre-war home cinecamera material of - mostly - the upper classes going about their lives in the UK, the empire, and around the world. It was all given a cosy atmosphere with little if any acknowledgement of the reality of colonial rule etc.

The title, as I recall, was some phrase or another that related to a rosy past.

Any help gratefully received.

I understand that this was a common greeting during the festival of Brumalia - which in later times in Byzantium began as early as today - Nov 24th - though I expect by then, it would not have a Latin greeting at all.

Am I correct in thinking that this - Vives Annos - would applicable to a group of revelers rather than to a single person? If so would anyone be able to tell me what the equivalent greeting for a single person would be?

Thanks in anticipation.

This year, my SO and I have decided to celebrate the approaching solstice by adapting the Roman festival of Brumalia - which, as celebrated in Byzantium in later times (recorded as late as C11th CE despite Xtian repression) began on Nov 24th and continued through to Saturnalia - and a little beyond.

Evidently a common greeting during the festival was 'Vives Annos' - Live for Years.

I follow a broadly Celtic path, but am happy to adopt, adapt and extend the Interpretatio Romana where it usefully adds to my understanding of the Celtic deities, and certainly am happy to adopt appropriate festivals from the Roman calendar.

We have decided to progressively decorate the house for the solstice

A large number of stories over the years have been considered for production on the screen as DW tales or as episodes of the various TV spin-offs, but have not ultimately been completed. Here is a list.

Many of these have been adapted since as Whoniverse tales in other media - BF audios or novels, most comonly. However, a few have cropped up outside DW.

Perhaps the most well known of these would be Douglas Adams' re-use of several elements in Life, The Universe and Everything that he initially intended for The Krikkitmen - ultimately completed in DW form as a novel by James Goss much more recently.

Any timescale.

A few of the more immediate things for me would be:

  • The National Theatre (I'm in the UK) are showing One Man, Two Guvnors on Youtube from this evening - the first of several weekly productions.
  • I'm in isolation - my SO and I have both had what seems like the current lurgy (but without testing, who knows...) and I'm going to be very pleased to get outside to queue up to look at the empty shelves in the local shop again. We're fine for food etc. It's just getting out.
  • Going out for breakfast in a cafe somewhere, when they exist again, and then for a hike afterwards.
  • A holiday in the autumn - we've got one booked in a Yurt in the Lake District. The one next month isn'

Right now, I live in a terrace built in 2005: the most modern that I have lived in. The oldest place I have lived was a farmworker's cottage built in 1601.

Other places I have lived include a few C19th and C20th semis and:

  • A C19th doctor's surgery.
  • The scullery of a C18th Army officer's married quarters.
  • A WWII military photographic workshop.

All converted to dwellings, of course.

I'm an INTJ.
