I'm dealing with a C-implemented (not C++) custom memory allocation engine for arrays, where each entry has a header and data following the header. This whole layout and how to manage it is stored in a MemEngine struct. In C, getting data would look like this mem->root->next->data and then cast it to proper data type. To make things worse, I have diverse structs each holding MemEngine of different kinds. So astruct_1 should say (astruct_1_datakind*) astruct1->mem->root->next->data but astruct_2 should say (astruct_2_datakind*) astruct2->mem->root->next->data

Currently I keep this mapping in comment fields for astruct_1 and astruct_2 but I was wondering if there's a way to

At some point I saw the decompiler detect, and convert a chunk of assembly into _strncpy and highlight it red because there actually wasn't any function calls. It doesn't do this however for all variations of similar logic. For example I have:

  OR strlen,0xffffffff
  XOR EAX,EAX
  SCASB.REP ES:EDI
  NOT strlen
  SUB EDI,strlen
  MOV EAX,strlen
  SHR strlen,0x2
  LEA EDX,[EBX + 0x10]
  MOV ESI,EDI
  MOV EDI,EDX
  MOVSD.REP ES:EDI,ESI
  MOV strlen,EAX
  AND strlen,0x3
  PUSH EBX
  MOVSB.REP ES:EDI,ESI

Which is essentially strncpy(dst, src, strlen(src)) but the decompiled view has those *.REP loo

There’s a large unfinished shed on my property and I’ve been looking into adding attic space both to add storage and a project to learn (and also insulating /finishing walls). Currently I need to install ceiling joists to separate the attic space from the first floor. I’ve been looking up at articles to do that and everything I find has two 2x4 on top of each other and on top of the studs as the box frame of the building…. My shed has one. The roof rafters are attached there so I’m stuck since I don’t particularly have an ability (nor money) to lift the roof and add a second 2x4 across the perimeter of the box frame.

It’s 27’ by 16’ shed with a gambrel roof. First “floor” is 7’. And there’

Between the pandemic, working from home, having kids, and moving to a new state, I have absolutely no local people I know. I live in the triangle area of NC, but if you want an online chat - you’re still welcome to message me.

I do research in automated binary analysis, I have a PhD from Louisiana Tech university. I also have masters in electrical engineering but I haven’t done much with that. Computers and electronics are my main hobbies as well, but I’ve also gotten into woodworking, making ice cream, bread, and 3d printing. Some of my hobbies are a bit of fusion of other hobbies - I make speakers, nixie clocks, magic mirrors, and currently trying to fix an 80s synthesizer.

I’m constantly experiencing Duolingo pushing waaaaaaay more complex quizzes on me than I’m ready for. Just now I got a notification that it’s time to practice so I clicked it and it took me to a lesson that was asking me stuff I never heard of, seemingly a few levels higher than what I’m at. Is that a bug? Will duo decide that I’m 5 levels higher if I just look up the answers and answer correctly? Will I be penalized for exiting the lesson?

Hopefully no one here will mark me as a heathen… I come from an engineering background and there are actually websites where you can submit design files for printed circuit boards and they’ll send them to a factory, etch and test the PCBs and mail it back to you…

Is there a similar service for laminated MDF? Is that the right term? I’m looking to glue fake wood patterns on MDF instead of painting it. Or maybe something cabinet like? I want to design and make some built in shelving, but want to save some time.

I’m looking for a triple paddle rocker switch but multipole. Everything I find is single pole because it assumes I can share the line.

I need it multipole because I have a regular light switch and I want to add two more switches to control a 12V DC LED strip.

Alternatively I’m looking for two low voltage switches that look like wall rocker switches… I just want something that controls three light sources and looks consistent with itself.

Any suggestions?

I'm looking to expand my HA sensors. My initial approach was to add magnetic reed sensors on doors and windows, which is fairly straight-forward to do, but most zwave or wifi or anything HA-compatible runs on batteries, which is fine on its own, but if I have to change batteries of 20 sensors routinely it gets annoying. So I'm looking to go a wired route. There doesn't seem to be anything off-the-shelf that's wired (or if there is please let me know).

So my next approach was to wire sensors to something like a raspberry pi or an esp microcontroller. I know the background to do that and get it running with openHAB. But before I begin, I'm curious if there's a platform better suited sensor r
