I'm looking for your recommendations for decent independent (not vintage) clothes shops in Bristol that are worth a visit. Preferably fairly central or a short bus ride from the centre, but happy to hear of your tips for places further afield.

The only two I know of are Cooshti on Park Street and Over Here in St Nick's (which I love) but I know there must be more gems that I've not encountered.

Thanks in advance for any and all advice!

I've been using the following code in middleware.ts in my Next projects for ages now, but I've just deployed a new project to Heroku and it's now causing a "this page is not redirecting properly" error. It seems like HTTPS requests are being redirected to HTTPS as well as non-HTTPS requests which is obviously not a good thing.

import { NextFetchEvent, NextRequest, NextResponse } from 'next/server';

export function middleware(req: NextRequest, ev: NextFetchEvent) {
    if (process.env.NODE_ENV === 'production' && req.headers.get('x-forwarded-proto') !== 'https') {
        return NextResponse.redirect(`https://${req.headers.get('host')}${req.nextUrl.pathname}`, 301);

It’s a colleague’s birthday in a month or so and she’s had a bit of a rough year so I want to make a nice cake to take into work and hopefully help lift her spirits a bit. The problem is I haven’t baked a cake in years.

I want to make a set mousse sandwiched between two chocolate cakes, and I have no idea what type of cake is best for the job. I want something super-chocolatey and reasonably light.

What are my options? Is there a recipe that incorporates real chocolate as well as cocoa powder, and which is robust enough to be layered in the way I’ve described?

Any and all advice will be much appreciated!

I've been roped into organising our office Christmas party this year. I'm trying to think of an activity for late afternoon before we go for dinner. In previous years we have done cocktail making classes and a rum making workshop at Bristol Rum School.

Does anyone know of any other fun booze-based activities similar-ish to the above? Something fairly central that can accommodate 12 or so people ideally.

Please send me your suggestions! (Anything sober will be shot down immediately by everyone at work so let's not go there.)

I watched Arbitrage (2012) a few years ago; a film about a hedge fund manager who is set to make a huge business deal that will net him a fortune. >!He accidentally causes the death of a young woman (with whom he's having an affair) by crashing his car after falling asleep at the wheel. He decides to cover up the accident which could jeopardise his deal if his involvement is exposed. Things get progressively worse for him.!<

Any suggestions for films like this would be appreciated. The protagonist does something bad and tries to cover it up while pretending everything is normal. They resort to more desperate measures a

Sorry for another boring Covid post, but I've got a positive lateral flow test result and the NHS website has instructed me to book a PCR test. When I've had these in the past the testing site on the random bit of land near Temple Meads (10-minute walk from my flat) was always available, however now it's telling me the closest venue is in Shirehampton, 7.2 miles away – impossible for me to get to as I don't drive or have a bike.

Does anyone know if this just means the Temple Meads site is currently fully booked (in which case I'll just keep trying) or if it has closed?

I know that pasta should go straight into boiling water, but are there any rules of thumb which I should be following when boiling other ingredients? Will it affect the taste or texture of potatoes, for example, if I add them to boiling water instead of slowly bring them to the boil, which is how I currently cook them? Or will it make little-to-no difference?

First of all please accept my apologies in advance for a potentially obvious and stupid question.

Is there a particular name given to cakes that look like this?

My assumption is that they are simple sponge cakes baked in a muffin tin and turned upside-down before icing. But my cake knowledge is lacking and I'm worried there is something more complex going on.

Anyone care to enlighten me please?
