As soon as a colony declares an independence war on you, you can immediately offer a white peace by switching to the "offer tribute" tab. Because the colony has not won any battles yet and they have no goals, the colony will agree to this treaty, keeping the colony under your control.

It's not clear to me what automating the army and navy tabs does. I thought it would auto-hire regulars and ships up to my force limit, but it does not do that. Is there a way to automate hiring? EU4 added the ability to create army templates to speed up hiring, but EU5 doesn't appear to have anything like that.
