Bizarre Banks Concidence

General Discussion

I live in a tiny town in rural NZ - I had a computer problem and Iain Banks wife's brother came to fix it! He saw my shelves of his books and we had a great chat about Banks for an hour. Apparently his mum lives here too but she's estranged from Iains wife and they don't talk anymore. Anyway, I'm off mountain biking with him at the weekend on the back of it, god help my poor legs!

Had an email this weekend from an accountant (legit one, I know people who use her) on Bartercard saying that she can help convert Qoin to COG, another crypto. Out of the frying pan, into the fire or does it have any merit?

Can anyone explain what's going on with Qoin in words of one syllable or less? :)
Like most, I'm stuck with Qoin that I can't spend or cash in - is that likely to change in the near future.? Or at all?

Listening to the above right now and although I’ve absolutely loved Jefferson Mays narration in all the Expanse books, I’m really struggling with his accent in this one, semi Mid Atlantic and a bit….posh? Tell me it’ll get better! Please. Otherwise I’ll be forced to go the dead tree route 😃

I just reread the old Banks Guardian article about where to start with his books thought I’d use their headings to spotlight my own Banks favourites…

The Entry Point For me it was Walking On Glass. Steve Miller threw it at me when we on the Transocean 8 in Norway and said ‘tell me what the fuck this is about’. And I’m still not sure, but it was a effective entry drug.

The Odd One Out The obvious choice is Raw Spirit, a homage to whisky, fast cars and his favourite music, but if we’re talking fiction I think I’d go for Dead Air, written in the aftermath of 9/11 for its leaden doom-y feel.

The Billionaires Favourite Going to skip this one I think, although any technology from the Culture w

Just listening to A Court of Rose a Thorns and struggling with it - who is the target audience? It reads like a fey, wan, YA style story written in ‘why Mr Darcy, pray not that you look at my uncovered ankles’ style but with porn.

Not my cup of tea so far (understatement…)

I love this game.

24 shots for, 1 against. xG 4.2 vs 0.09 4 disallowed goals (most I’ve ever seen) 2 missed penalties 64% possession End result?

1-1, scoring with their only shot, a 30 yard, deflected, Hail Mary, rocket in the 98th minute.

It’s moments like this where you either have to laugh or throw your monitor out of the window.

Like I say, love this game, the highs, the lows and the absolutely ridiculous 😀

Can anyone enlighten me as to the point of that ‘location’? Same with Staying At Home? Are they euphemisms for something I just don’t know about? 😀
