Hey everyone, incoming comp Eng student this fall. I’ve been using apple products all my life, and my current laptop is getting old, so it’s due time for an upgrade. I’ve been really excited for the new OLED MacBook, and after recent info about it came out, I really wanna get it (I can wait a few months with my old laptop until it comes out).
Anyways, my main C O N C E R N is that many people say that MacBooks can’t be used for engineering - not compaitable with the software. Is that true for comp Eng as well, cuz obv there’s the coding aspect (which Mac’s excel at) but are the circuits, FGPA, PCB and other hardware stuff just not available on MacBook? I’d like to hear experiences from curr
Hey everyone, I'm an incoming CE (stream8) student and was deciding which residence option to apply for (I have a roommate so want a double).
my dilemma has boiled down to
QoL (own space, no communal bathroom, kitchen etc) for suite VS better social life, the traditional movie university experience and more fun in traditional (ikik the "the social scene is what u make of it" but in general, ive heard social life is better in traditional)
Finally, i believe its likely a situation of REV/V1 vs UWP, since those seem like the most likely choices for both options.
any real experiences from UW students would be appreciated, and just in general insights or advice!
Hey everyone, I'm an incoming CE student (stream8) this fall and was wondering what residence to apply for.
Im have a roommate lined up, so either a traditional double room or suite style.
Some notes about me:
- I want to make a lot of friends at loo and have a good time and be social (to the best u can at UW). Like i imagine a big family ig, where we all maybe pullout to some random place to the watch Knicks vs Spurs or play mariokart, just in general i wanna good memories and lifelong friends.
- the two main QoL things i care about are air conditioning/heat and washroom. especially washroom, i dont wanna share it with the WHOLE FLOOR, like a few rooms is fine
- i think blueberries
Hey, possible incoming CS student here, and I was wondering if it’s possible to do both the DH and AI specialization while in CS, and to hear from anyone who has done that and what their experience was.
Experiences from the DH specialization would also be appreciated, and their insights into how getting a firmware job has been for them.
Also, do u HAVE to do sequence 4 for DH, or is it jsut recommended, i would rather do sequence one.
Finally, how is the courseload like? Do u think u would’ve been better off just doing CE, or does this still give u the free time that CS ppl use for side projects.
Thanks to any who answer any question.
Have until tommroow to decide between CE and CS at UW. I’ve done tons of research and talked to people, so I need more final insights right now then anything. Here’s everything on my mind:
Interests:
CE software >= CS >>> CE hardware
That’s my line of thinking for my interests. I don’t really have any appeal in building stuff manually, or doing things like soldering or stripping wires. Where I do like CE (and why I applied) is coding hardware to do things like with arduino and raspberry pi’s. But pure CS is also interesting, where hopefully I could get into AI/ML, automation, or just build cool useful applications.
Is it worth it to go thru CE hardware courses and labs and circuits to
Hey everyone! Could anyone in CS or CE (any upper, first, upper etc) post what their schedules look like. In my decision in deciding between the two programs, I want to see how "bad" CEs courseload is compared to CS, like how big the gap is and if I'll have freetime to work on side projects, leetcode, social life etc
Hey everyone,
I’m currently staring at my offers for CS and CE (and CFM), and in part of my deicison i want to know how my 5 years at waterloo will be based on which program i pick. (not just how my career will go)
I’ve done a lot of reading, and it seems like Engineering (CE) has some insane QoL perks that CS just doesn't touch. I'm trying to figure out if these are actually game-changers or if I'm just romanticizing the "Iron Ring" lifestyle.
The stuff that actually sounds cool about CE:
- The Cohort Lock: This is the big one. Having 120 people in every single class sounds like an automatic social life/safety net. We ge tto go through the same hardship grinds trogether, in the
Hey everyone, I've just been accepted into all three programs in the title, and I need help deciding which to choose. Excited to join the loo in the fall.
In terms of interests, honestly, I'm into all 3, which is why I applied to all 3. Physics, AI, finance, computers, etc. I just find technology in general fascinating, so I'd be fine going into all three. I'm here to help determine which is best for other goals.
The main careers I've been looking at are quant dev, quant trader (haha, everyone wants to be a quant), AI/ML engineer in big tech like FAANG/MANGO, or just anything else in big tech. I want to obviously make the highest salary possible, make sure I can stay employed,/acc get empl

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Just something thats not crazy expensive, I guess set the max to 5K CAD, in Canada btw (flexible if it’s worth it for something that’ll last all of uni)
Are you open to refurbs/used?
Prefer new, but open to refurbished if it’s from a reliable source and good condition. Probably buy straight from the source company
How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance and battery life are top priority, then build quality, then form factor. I’d prefer something sleek like a MacBook/ultrabook but not
Hey everyone, I’ve been accepted to computer engineering at Waterloo, and it’s most likely where I’ll be going (super excited to meet all of you).
I’ve started making some preparations, and one of the big things is getting a solid laptop for university. Right now I have a MacBook Air (M1, 8GB), and I’m not sure if it’ll hold up once things get more demanding. If I’m wrong and it’s actually fine, let me know.
My main dilemma is this: I was thinking of upgrading to a new MacBook (probably with the M5 Pro chip), but I keep seeing people say “don’t get a MacBook for engineering,” mainly because some engineering software doesn’t run well or at all on macOS.
For those in comp eng (or similar pr
WWOOH! Everyone else that got it please DM. Lets start making connections now 🤑
The 2025 - 2026 spreadsheet says that someone got into SE at Waterloo. is this true or troll.
