Ok, so in the movie, an alternate reality exists where George Bailey doesn’t exist and Old man Gower lost his job and license for accidentally killing a kid with rat poison. George thwarts it as a kid by returning to the drug store and let him know about the mistake- so that reality doesn’t occur.

Gower was drunk mixing drugs and filling prescriptions. That alone should have him lose his license and credibility.

A great many medical professionals have terrible life changing news and they still have to continue and provide care to their patients. If you can’t do it, take the day off. Going to the job drunk? Unspeakable.
