reddit responds to Eli5 question regarding braces -- "It's cheaper to fly to Thailand and getting them done there."
yeah, orthodontists scheming money of the honest folk and putting it into yachts, gold toilets and laughing all the way to the bank.

I saw this BS yesterday. It never ceases to amaze me how in other areas people will readily admit they don't know something, but when it comes to dentistry everyone's an expert.
And the hate for dentists seems to translate into posts like this and they literally just talk about how they're trying to get your money. It's really amazing to me that they can hate their dentist/ortho immediately but love any kind of physician they see. It's a weird stigma
I think it's because people don't value what we do as a medical procedure. They think teeth just magically move, or cavities aren't something to be afraid of, or that root canals and crowns are just a way to make money. The corporate atmosphere doesn't help this (by giving away "free" cleanings/exams/x-rays) and sometimes we don't either.
If people knew that a single MRI cost more than their braces... would they care as much? Healthcare is "free" because of your insurance (which isn't free, obviously) so they don't know the actual value of most things. I think just the surgical part of a rhinoplasty averages around $4500 and that's without anesthesia!
