Something I've noticed recently and want to see how it fits with other people's experience.

When you take somebody out on a date (you ask them, you arrrange it, you pay for it, you drive them safely home), who sends the "Thank you " text afterwards?

I've noticed recently that I am the person who says thank you, it doesn't matter if I send the text when I get home, the next morning/evening, or 1 day later again (I rarely leave it that long). Mostly my responses are "yes I had a wonderful time too". But so rarely is there an actual "thank you".

Am I just getting wrapped up about nothing, or is it a common thing that people don't say "thank you" when you take them out on a date ?

I am encountering a weird error when calling a binary specifying it's path vs having the shell resolve the path using the $PATH variable.

When i specify the path explicitly the command works as expected, but when I let the shell resolve the path, bash launches pico with the output from the first command inside it. When I quit pico, it saves the buffer to /tmp

Specifically:

When I type the below command, the output of fortune is piped into fc and it generates the correct output (fc is a word frequency counter).

fortune | ~/bin/fc

But when I type the below command,

fortune | fc

bash opens a text editor (pico) and I get:

Too many errors from stdin

Buffer written

My daughter would like to see Chinese alligators while we visit Shanghai this summer. There’s a wetland park out on Chongming island which says they have them. But I don’t want to go all the way out there.

Has anybody here been to the wild animal park in Pudong and can confirm if they are there (it doesn’t say on the website). Or anywhere else closer to the city ?

Link about the Chinese alligators on chongming island: https://www.shanghaibirding.com/chinese-alligator/

Hopefully somebody has some info.

Thanks.

Lads is it just me? all I need to do is think about putting the grill on and the bloody smoke alarm goes off like a demented elephant.

Not even a sniff of sausage in the air yet. What’s the deal ? Are our smoke alarm standards too sensitive?

I hate it.

I hate seeing so many people, who never show up in real-life ways, posting on their instagram and facebook about how important mental health is.

I'm a separated dad, I never have the kids with me on my birthday, and it's my birthday this weekend, and my ex-wife is trying to keep the kids with her "so they can do Darkness into light". Apparently I should understand because I've had my struggles.

Hi I need help preventing dosbox-x launching an additional terminal window for it's console.

I am launching dosbox-x in KDE using it's application launcher. It opens dosbox-x's main window, but also a terminal window for the console / log.

I'd prefer not to have the terminal window opened but there seems no way to prevent this.

I've tried un-clicking "launch in terminal", in the KDE application config, this prevents dosbox-x launching at all.

I've tried using --nolog, this has no effect on the terminal window.

I've tried using --noconsole, this also has no effect on the terminal window.

I am using ubuntu 22.04, with KDE, any ideas appreciated.
