I've seen people compare players of AFL with other sports codes but I never see them compared to influential Nigerian musicians. So I wondered if there was anyone in the AFL (or WAFL/SANFL/VFL) who could be considered a Nigerian musician and political activist regarded as the principal innovator of Afrobeat, a Nigerian music genre that combines West African music with American funk and jazz.
Thoughts?
Anyone who's been near a Collingwood fan in the last 5 years will tell you "Maynard was held". West Coast fans could confidently say "Sampi was held". I've just read an Adelaide fan's comment that Walker was held during a final.
So let's finally complete this karmic wheel, who from your club was held, costing your team the game?
In the absence of a State of Origin or the E.J. Whitten game, I propose, the Yearly AFL Correspondents Carnival.
Every year the journalists and top pundits of our great game will come together in the spirit of sportsmanship and hit the field as a united front, against a team made of current and ex-players who would most want the chance to slam them into the ground in a perfectly legal tackle.
Since the AFL Media know exactly what every team is doing wrong, and how to fix it, I doubt it will be a particularly fair contest, however, it'll do the current and former players a world of good to see how this great game should really be played.
