After a year of neglect, Im excited to clean up tanks! FTS 10g + new female koi betta

Today I had to euthanize a fish for the first time, but its the 7th cory Ive lost over the last year and Im really frustrated...
Ive always found them with shredded fins, usually after algae wafer days but recently Ive just been feeding flakes and occasionally rehydrated bloodworms. I never see it happening but Ive seen my livebearers be aggressive with each other and the tetras (tho Ive never lost a tetra).
Ive tried feeding at different times of day, lights on/off, breaking the wafers into numerous small bits, feeding everyone else first.
I tried increasing the school size

lazerteam.tugg.com/events/79769I have a tetra whisper 20 air pump and want to use 2 mini sponge filters in my 10g. I picked up a T connector from petco but the bubbles are very uneven between the 2 filters. I tried using a binder clip on the tubing but its hard to adjust accurately.
Is there a valve that can correct this? Do I need a stronger pump?
Finally caught one of my platies bouncing off the sword leaves. They all do it when they think Im not watching...
imgur.com/a/GJDaXI have a used canister filter that doesnt have an intake grate. Could I go without buying a new grate since Im just going to stick a sponge over it anyway for fry?
I just got a fluval 305 from craigslist that looks like itll need a few replacement parts. The impeller cover clip broke immediately so I know Ill need to replace that. I havent even tested it since thats broken. Should I?
I think Ill need to replace the intake stem since he cut it pretty short. Where there would normally be an intake grate theres this ball type intake thing that Ive never seen before. Do I need to buy a grate if Im just going to stick a coarse sponge over the intake? I do have fry in the tank.

I know this is long, I tried to break it up so its a little easier to skim :P
So my decision to lose weight wasnt a new years resolution or even a monday. It was actually made soon after my SO proposed going to RTX (a convention in Austin Tx) in February 2015. I went from super excited to "Oh shit, what about pictures.." This turned into "Im not going to be able to walk between hotels and the exhibit hall all day" and eventually "My weight is keeping me from doing things I really want to do." Boom... That was something I had sort of known but I thought I could get by being fat but this was a direct "Loose weight to do the awesome thing or stay home
I have been working with this one betta for months, trying to make him happy. He was tearing up his fins in the 29g so he got his own 10g. He was still tearing up his fins so Ive changed filters, plants, lighting, removed the driftwood, etc. I made a post about how I thought he might be a biter but Im sure he is now. He has a square(ish) shaped chunk out of the end of his tail when there was nothing to hurt himself on (If you look at the pics, this was around the time the plastic cup was in the tank but after the platy was moved back to her tank.) and Ill sometimes see him curl around on himself and sort of wiggle like a dog chasing its tail...
Well a couple days ago I made a coconut house
