Hello, this is my 40th custom. To me, this is an easy one, thought there is a little bit of a trick. (Often I think something will be incredibly hard and people breeze through it, so I am not a good judge of difficulty levels.)
Alliteration is the repetition of the same initial consonant sound in nearby words or syllables. For example, "The wild winter wind whipped at William's wig."
Assonance is the repetition of similar vowel sounds close to one another in a text. For example, "A dry light rises high in the bright sky."
A gully is primarily a small, steep-sided channel formed by running water, especially erosion from concentrated runoff. It can be temporary or intermittent and is often relatively narrow.
A gulch is less strictly defined, but generally means a narrow, steep-sided valley or ravine, often one containing a stream or dry streambed. Nomenclature varies by geographic region and is not always determined by size, but generally a gully is dependent on erosion.
Rooibos comes from the Aspalathus linearis shrub, native to the Western Cape of South Africa. It is caffeine-free and has a naturally sweet, smooth, nutty, and woody flavor with very low tannins, meaning it rarely tastes bitter.
Tea comes from the Camellia sinensis plant, native to Asia. This includes black, green, white, and oolong teas. Has bold, earthy, or malty flavors and contains higher levels of tannins, which can cause a bitter taste if steeped too long.
cheddar cheese is a cow's milk, semi-hard cheese originating in Somerset, England, often dyed orange with annatto. It undergoes a distinctive production step called cheddaring, in which drained curds are cut into slabs, stacked, and repeatedly turned. The weight of the stacked blocks squeezes out remaining liquid whey, helps build acidity, and creates a dense, layered, and fibrous texture.
Colby cheese is a cow's milk, semi-hard cheese invented in Colby, Wisconsin, also often dyed orange. Unlike cheddar, its curds undergo a washed-curd process, in which they are rinsed with warm or cold water. Washing removes some of the lactose, slowing acid development and producing a milder, s
An alpaca is a domesticated camelid. They are gentle-natured, shorter than llamas, and are bred for their soft, premium wool. They have short, blunt ears.
A vicuna is a wild ancestor of the alpaca. They are smaller than alpacas and their wool is considered the finest in the world. They have long, upright ears. They have a protected status, cannot be raised in captivity, and can only be shorn every three years
It’s a new custom puzzle! And when I say this one is a challenge, boy I mean it this time! So tricky!
Fog is a cloud of water vapor suspended in the air. It has a thick, cloudy look and obscures visibility beyond about one kilometer. Both fog and mist form when humid air cools until it reaches its dew point, causing water vapor to condense into tiny droplets.
Mist is also tiny liquid water droplets suspended in the air. It has a thin, wispy, translucent look and does not tend to effectively reduce visibility.
Beans are a subset of pulses. A bean is the nutrient-rich, kidney-shaped or oval seed of a leguminous plant. Examples include green beans, soy beans, kidney beans, or black beans.
Pulses are a subset of legumes. A pulse is the dried, edible seed of a legume. Examples include lentils, split peas, and chickpeas.
Kippers are Atlantic herring that have been gutted, split in a butterfly cut, salted, and cold-smoked. Kipper fillets are firm, dense, and flaky like a small piece of meat.
Sardines are smaller fish, such as sprats or pilchards, that have been headed, gutted, and cooked or canned whole. There is more of a fishy flavor and less of a smoked flavor than kippers. They tend to be softer and more delicate.
Abstract art uses forms and colors in a way unrelated to the creation of recognizable features. It may be chaotic splotches of color as in the canvases of Jackson Pollock, or straight lines and shapes of color as in Piet Mondrian's art.
Surrealist art tends to use realistic or recognizable references in absurd or impossible ways. The works of Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte are archetypal examples of surrealist art.
A butte is a flat-topped land mass with steep sides, usually taller than it is wide. A butte may be what remains after erosion has worn away a mesa
A mesa is a land mass with a large, flat top, often several miles across. It is much wider than it is tall. A mesa may represent the remnant of a once-continuous plateau after erosion.
Lava is the molten rock ejected by a volcano from a vent such as a crater or fissure. Lava is magma that has breached the surface of the earth.
Magma is a mixture of molten silicate rock, crystals, and gas within the earth, generally existing under high pressure. Water vapor, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and other gases remain dissolved in it until such time as it erupts.
A lake is a body of water deep enough to form distinct temperature layers in the summer, with warm water on top and cold water at the bottom. Plants tend to grow only near the shallow edges. They may be large enough to allow wind to form waves on the surface.
A pond is a body of water usually so shallow that light can reach the bottom. Plants may grow all across the bottom of the pond. The surface is generally calm. A pond may hold fish, but the lower oxygen level means only hardier species can thrive.
