I feel like POB missed an oppottunity for Jack to pull off an escape or capture a prize by taking advantage of Polycrest's ability to sail astern at hitherto unknown speeds. I can imagine him backing the sails, stopping the headway and shooting astern to cross someone's stern and rake them.

Kiwi trampers, hunters, farmers: your advice please. I'm looking for a new pair of boots. Mostly worn in the bush, sometimes above bushline on rocks and scree. I want to spend $600 tops.

I'm not looking for crampon use, and I won't often carry over 20kg. Must be waterproof and give good ankle support. I like the look of Scarpa SL Active but it isn't waterproof. I also like the Low Renegade but it looks a bit lightly built.

Keen to hear your recommendations.

Master and Commander. When we meet him in Port Mahon Stephen is sleeping rough and starving for want of money. He is desperately pleased to take a 30 pound a year surgeon's position and grateful for any square meal. Yet he was bought up in the area (later we learn he is a landowner), is fluent in the language, and has a high-status profession. While waiting to sail Stephen visits to hospital to volunteer his services and to "feel the rasp of saw on bone" once more.

How can he not obtain any advance on funds or why does he have no local friends or contacts (in later books he knows everyone) who could take him in?

I suspect the answer is that this was the first book and there was no reason

POB often uses the term “young person” to refer to an attractive young woman. Was this a common usage of the word “person” in regency England? Google has failed to turn up an answer.

I’m finding it difficult to get my fix this year. I’ve visited a few supermarkets and fish shops and only got lucky once, and those were second grades.

Any tips on a reliable dealer in Bluffies? (Prefer not to get second grades but if that’s all there is then they’ll be fine).

Apologies if this has been posted already: can anyone recommend some seriously good dine-in dumplings in Chch? Prefer Japanese or Chinese flavours.
