The HPLHS's silent film "The Call of Cthulhu" just dropped on Tubi. Yeah, I know, Tubi ugh. But it's a film rarely found in the wilds of streaming services -- I've only watched it on my personal DVD -- and, being an HPLHS product, it's very (but not perfectly) faithful adaptation of Lovecraft's story. It's silent, as mentioned above, but that kinda fits in with era and mood of the story.

With recent updates, I'm getting autocomplete suggestions that I have no interest in. For instance, when I am about to go to Reddit, typing in "Re..." gets me "Redbox." Which isn't of any interest to me. Redbox will never be what I'm going for. At no point in my life will typing the letters "Re..." be in service of reaching the Redbox website. But it can't be removed as far as I can tell. Am I just stuck with a particularly annoying form of Mozilla monetizing the browser by selling autocompletes to companies or is there some sort of fix that I simply cannot figure out? I know how to remove bookmarks and browsing history, but this one is defeating me.

I've just started a re-read and have reached the Farmer Maggot part. Even as a kid I found that choice in character naming to be a little strange. It's not like "maggot" meant something different in the first half of the 20th century, so the name does stand out. Was there some sort of linguistic or cultural history behind that choice? And was it pronounced as it's spelled or was there some British twist on pronunciation, like pronouncing it "Magoo" or something?

And, yes, I'm now picturing Farmer Maggot as a chubby almost blind hobbit relying on his dogs to sniff out trespassers while leaving a swathe of unintentional destruction behind him.
