I'm new to Cincinnati and still trying to figure out where everything is. I love the feeling when you need something and you know exactly the guy to go to for it, but not yet.
Bamboo poles hold up the porch awning on the shantyboat
Today's quest is finding bamboo poles. I'm repairing the porch awning on Dotty. I was stupid and didn't roll up the awning last winter during the heavier snows and the weight broke the horizontal cross member.
In a lot of places I've been, people grow their own bamboo. But I don't know anyone here who has a little grove of bamboo. None of
I have a shantyboat that uses wee tires for the bumpers when I'm docked. Wee tires, not like your Corolla tires, but like the donut tire that's under the carpet in your hatchback. I need.a couple. Tire stores frequently have a giant pile of tires that they sometimes have to pay to get rid of. LMK if you know of a tire pile that is not too far from downtown.
Do I like sidechaincompress? Yes. Is it better than nothing? Absolutely. Is it broadcast quality? Not so much.
I'm using sidechaincompress to duck a music bed under spoken word. It works, but I only get two timing controls — attack and release — which map to (b) and (c+d) in my diagram. What I really want is four:
- a) how far in advance we start ducking before the voice hits
- b) the slope of the duck
- c) how long after the voice stops before we start coming back up
- d) the slope of the recovery
The lack of lookahead means (a) is always zero — the compressor reac
How do you tune the looseness in a generative system? How do you know when you've gotten too specific and killed the surprise, or too loose and lost the idea entirely? Do you tune by ear, by tweaking parameters, by gut?
I created a procedurally generated audio stream called DriftConditions (driftconditions.org). Every mix in the stream is based on a human-made recipe. Creators start with a general idea of what they want to hear — a theory of the case. Something like "Long Narrative with Music Bed," "Interrupted Sermon," or "Fucked Up Radio Aircheck." These are all real recipes on DriftConditions. Then the creator attempts to craft a recipe that has enough spec
Late one night in the early oughts, I was driving home from my radio show on KUSP Santa Cruz in my old pickup truck — a late-night aural collage of music, story, and found sound — when I stumbled across something strange on the dial. Someone was layering a sermon with BBC news, lacing it with static, the whole thing drifting in and out. I pulled over on a dark mountain highway to listen. I eventually lost the signal. When I tuned back in, I realized I'd been parked between two stations the whole time, and the gorgeous mess had been an accident. That's when I asked: if something this beautiful can happen by accident, can you make it happen on purpose?
15 years later, I created DriftCondition
I occasionally need help with unskilled tasks at my house, but I have no idea where to find day laborers. I went to Home Depot and Lowe's in Norwood at 6am to 7am (on Christmas Eve, might not be ideal). But no workers. And asking HD employees only met with perplexed looks. They'd never heard of such a thing.
I know that ICE and DHS harassment makes being a laborer more difficult. I was willing to go to the secret laborer meetup or use the magic app, but I don't know where to look. Ideas?
I know that variations of this question have been asked here, and the consensus seems to be Get AltaFiber if your address supports it and avoid Spectrum. I'm in English Woods and don't have fiber available.
I'm looking for something like 200Mbps connection as I work from home and do a lot of interneting (steaming, tele-conference, bunch o' devices, some gaming). What have you had good luck with? Definitely want reliability. Extra points for affordability.
(No, I don't want to do some Cell WiFi thing.)
Edit: this is a fix of my previous message looking for gig internet, but you are right, I probably don't need gig. I'm not running my own ISP. But ≥ 200Mbps would be nice.

The University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) is hiring a tenure-track professor in Games and Animation — a genuine research and teaching line, not a temporary contract.
We’re looking for someone with a strong creative-research portfolio in games or animation, substantial academic or industry experience, and years of successful teaching. Someone who can bridge studio practice, theory, and critical inquiry — and contribute to a program that treats making as a form of scholarship.

A rare one — the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) is hiring a tenure-track professor in Games and Animation. Real research + teaching, not a contract gig.
We’re looking for someone with an impressive animation or game portfolio, industry and/or academic achievements, and years of successful teaching. Extra points for experience in under-the-camera and 2D animation — we’d love to see someone keeping those traditions alive while pushing into new forms.
It’s the kind of position where creative work counts as research and your practice actually matters.
Apply before reality notices and shuts the portal.
