This subreddit is intended to compile authoritative answers to frequently repeated questions on r/AskPhilosophy, and to provide a resource for r/AskPhilosophy posters looking for more information on common topics.

The purpose of this subreddit is to provide generally accepted answers to common questions, not espouse your personal opinion, argue about particular ideas, or ask original questions. You may comment on posts asking for clarification, but please refrain from arguing about the content.

Posts violating these guidelines will be removed, and repeated violators will be banned.

You may post either a new answer or a request for a new answer.

If you post an answer, please try to use this format:

Short question in the title
Slightly more detailed exposition of the question/issue first in the post.
TL;DR summary of the answer (as much as possible).
Authoritative answer to the question (remember to cite sources where appropriate).
Link(s) for further reading.
Tag post with "answer" flair

If you can't provide an authoritative answer yourself, you may also post a request for someone to address a question that you think deserves to be included, but which you don't feel qualified to address yourself. These posts will be removed once someone has posted a satisfactory answer.

If you post a request, please try to use this format:

[Request] flag in the post title, followed by the question itself.
Links to instances of the question from r/AskPhilosophy in the body of the post. You don't need to list every instance ever, but in the spirit of the "F" in "FAQ," you should list several instances.
Tag the post with "Request" flair after posting.
