Procedures of the Supreme Court of the Model United States

The Chief Justice shall be elected from amongst the Justices to serve a six month term, ending one week before the start of the nationwide elections for the United States Senate and the office of President. There shall be no term limit
A petition may be submitted to the court by messaging r/MUSGOVSCOTUS via moderator mail.
Any petition to this court shall refer to the appropriate legal authorities including case law and relevant statutes and contain the question this court is asked to address.
Every petition shall be published in a separate thread on r/MUSGOVSCOTUS, in which any reply and amicus briefs shall be filed. The Justices may reject petitions before such a post is made.
The Justices shall vote on each petition. If at least one out of three votes is achieved, the petition is granted and shall be scheduled for oral argument; otherwise, the petition is rejected.
Within the time period set for oral argument, the attorneys for each party (and, if intervening, for the United States) shall post legal arguments in an argument thread on r/MUSGOVSCOTUS, where they shall be questioned by the Justices.
After oral argument, the case shall be deliberated upon by the Justices until a majority opinion is reached.
The majority opinion, along with any concurring or dissenting opinions, shall be published in r/MUSGOVSCOTUS.

Case Law and Precedent

In this simulation, Supreme Court cases decided after May 17^(th) 2015 do not form valid precedent. In other words, anything that happened in the real world after that cutoff date does not matter.

Standing

Due to the limited size of this simulation, the prohibition on third-party standing is loosened. Departing from real-life rules, you may bring a case before this court on behalf of a fictitious institution or person, as long as such an institution is not already established within the simulation. However, you will still need to establish that the person or institution you are filing for would in fact have standing.
