Pluckeye: an Internet filter that helps with self-control

r/pluckeye

Pluckeye is an Internet filter for people who want help with self-control. It optionally lets you choose a time delay in advance. If you've set a time delay, and you want to disable Pluckeye or to make its settings more lenient, you must first wait until the delay passes. Pluckeye works on Windows, Linux, Mac OS, and Android.

An introduction to Pluckeye

Pluckeye is an Internet filter for people who want help with self-control.

It optionally lets you choose a time delay in advance. If you've set a time delay, and you want to disable Pluckeye or to make its settings more lenient, you must first wait until the delay passes.

Setting the delay

You can choose the delay yourself. If you want to set it to just two minutes, you can. If you want it to set it to three days, you can do that too. (At first, you should keep the delay very short, according to the Pluckeye tips page.)

As far as we know, Pluckeye is the only Internet filter with a built-in feature which lets you set such a delay.

Images and videos

Pluckeye can hide images and videos on all websites, or certain websites only, or no websites. This all depends on your settings. If you'd like to enable or disable images and videos, see this post.

Platforms

Pluckeye works on Windows, Mac OS, Android, and Linux. The Android version is not yet feature-complete, though.

Pluckeye for Android

Pluckeye for Android is still not yet feature-complete. But it now can show images. Please read at least the first paragraph of the tutorial before you download it.

Other self-control software

Some more self-control software, some of which may be difficult or impossible to defeat:

Multi-platform

Lockbox. (Cross-platform. Free.) You may find it impossible to defeat.
Truple. (Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux, Android, iOS.) Works using screenshots. Pricing is here. Free trial is here. Developer is u/camhart73.
Cold Turkey. (Windows, Mac, Android.) See here.
Freedom. (Windows, Mac, Android, iOS. Free trial. Pricing is here.)
Geringo.
OpenDNS FamilyShield. Protects your computer and all your Wi-Fi devices.
Intent. (Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS. Free.) Gentle, not strict.
Forest (Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, Windows Phone. Free.)
LeechBlock (Windows, Mac, Linux, Android. Firefox-only. Free.) Has anti-tamper features. You might find that a 30-second delay works better than a block.
Hide your router in your basement, office, car, or school locker. (Source.)
And other options.

Desktop-only

Delayed Gratification. (Chrome. Free.) Delays, but doesn't block.
Crackbook Revival. (Chrome. Free.) Delays, but doesn't block.
SelfControl. (Mac. Free.) Has strong anti-tamper features.
TimeProtect. (Windows. Costs about $10-$20 per six months.)
FindFocus. (Windows, Mac. Pricing is here.)
SelfRestraint (PC. Free. Unmaintained.) Still works for some, but not others. If a site doesn't get unblocked at the appointed time, contact u/tealhill, who can point you to a set of instructions for fixing the problem.

Mobile-only

Stay Focused. (Android. Free.)
AppBlock. (Android. Free.) For better self-control, you can add the app itself to your blocked-apps list, according to this source.
Keep Me Out. (Android. Free.)
Offtime. (Android, iOS.)
Or you can pay for NetSpark or GenTech or a similar extra-strong Internet-filtering service.

More thoughts

r/nosurf offers some suggestions. (Note to self: fix link once that page uses proper headers.) r/block maintains a longer list of self-control software.
