4.5 year progress (135lbs to 170lbs)

Progress Post

Height in all photos: 6'

Just wanted to share my progress over the last 4.5 years. Photos begin when I was 17 years old, am now 21. I've always been extremely slender and lanky. I did basic body weight exercises (pushups and situps) throughout highschool but only started going to the gym in January 2021. After that is obviously where most of my progress came. I still don't have an actual routine, I just vaguely follow push/pull and try to increment the weight. Tried to go to the gym 3-4 days a week. I want to change that this year and actually follow a routine.

Regarding nutrition, I pretty much eat whatever I want (I know that's not good). I should be eating more because I want to keep on gaining so I also want to work on that this year.

Anyways, just wanted to share my progress and show that even loose routine/nearly no food tracking still gives some results! Just keep consistent at the gym and try to eat a lot :)

Great gains! I’ve done almost the same exact progression (6’0”, 126->175, 4 years) but focused a lot on strength, you’re looking way more cut than me. Keep it up king

Thanks man! I want to seriously put on more mass in the next few months, so I'm expecting to lose a bit of definition along the way.

That’s some solid progress for a relatively unstructured approach! I bet if you dial in your nutrition and follow an established routine your gains would be ridiculous.

Thank you! That's what I'm hoping too, I just need to be consistent enough and stick with a plan

Honestly, don't have any old photos of my legs, but they definitely got bigger over the last year. Finally started to do squats after avoiding them because of how painful they were, but I worked through it and can do them now

Great work man! I'm the same height as you and had the same before and after weight. I did it it less than a year though, definitely didn't end up as lean as you because my routine wasn't consistent. Following a routine would've certainly led to quicker results but pretty much everything works if you consistently make progress.

I'm surprised that you were able to gain weight without consciously trying to eat more. In my experience, the weight quickly falls off if I'm not actively trying to bulk or maintain. I'm assuming it's because I never worked out enough to stimulate a large appetite.

You're in a great position to bulk right now, looking forward to your even better progress post a few years from now!

Thanks dude! This year I want to actually pish myself and stick to a stricter routine. Like you said, you achieved my same results in a quarter of the time it took me, so I know I could see way better gains in a shorter amount of time!

I will say I was actively trying to eat more, but I never bothered to measure my calories or anything like that. I just tried to eat until I was past full, but even then I know I could be doing a better job on that front.

Thanks for the motivation, I definitely want to post an update in a few months!

Nice job on making progress with your fitness journey over the past few years, especially since you haven't really had a strict routine or tracked your nutrition. But keep in mind that while exercise is important, what we eat plays a big role in our overall health and well-being. If you want to keep making progress and reach your goals, it might be helpful to focus on getting a bit more structured with your workouts and pay more attention to your nutrition. This could mean tracking what you eat, eating a balanced diet with plenty of whole, minimally processed foods, and making sure you're getting enough calories to support muscle growth.

Of course, everyone's different, so what works for one person might not work for another. Consider talking to a fitness pro or a registered dietitian who can help you come up with a plan that's tailored to your specific needs and goals.
