Problem with birds not claiming nest boxes.

I'm having a problem with chickens, turkeys and ducks not claiming next boxes. I'm about 2 years into this game and I haven't found a way to fix it. http://i.imgur.com/x5mRn.png My nest box set up looks like this. I've tried making a pasture over it, picking up the boxes and putting it back down, and I got maybe 1 bird to temporarily occupy one, nothing permanent. Anyone know how to fix this? And any tips on the layout of this layer would be appreciated. Thanks!

Do you want the eggs to hatch, or do you just want them to lay eggs? Because if there's a valid stockpile for them to be taken to, dwarves will automatically stockpile the eggs (check your stocks screen.)

Birds won't permanently occupy a nest box, they'll only do that when they're ready to lay eggs or incubating them. The rest of the time the nest boxes will be marked as 'unclaimed.'

I'm trying to set up a chicksplosion, so I set it where they wouldn't carry them into the stockpile. I'm not sure if they are laying eggs, as I haven't had any eggs hatch and it's been 2 years.

  • Use [t] to see what is inside the nest.
  • Do you have roster?
  • Slap door and keep it closed, chick hatch after 6 months, I think

I checked what was in the nest boxes with [t] and there's nothing. What's a roster?

Male chicken or I don't know how to type. Are you sure your dwarves didn't pick up eggs? I just place nests in a room pasture there all my birds and close door behind them.

They lay eggs, then leave if someone takes the eggs.
