Don't throw out the baby with the bath water!

Humor/Memes

Yeah, you know what? Fuck that noise. I was told the "bath water" was pure and clean, so a baby would have been clearly visible. If your bath water weren't so damn filthy I might be able to see the "baby".

Is the baby… tithing?

The baby in this metaphor is usually Christianity or spirituality. Usually coming from someone who traded Mormonism for some different deluded beliefs and thinks they've now found "the truth" and need to lead us to it.

All religions are the same.

Yeah… that was a failed attempt at a joke.

Sorry, gotta disagree. Your joke was a complete success.

Nope. Lazy baby doesn’t even have a job.

Yeah there wasn’t any baby in the bath water I had either.

With every fiber of my being I know there is a baby in this bath water... Even though I have never seen it, it's impossible to see it or any affects of it. I have been taught since I was too young to understand the world that it's there and I have felt positive feelings to tell me there is one. So it must be.

... Ok there isn't a baby in this bath water, but you can't prove there is no baby in that bath water even though there is no visible, touchable or provable sign of anything there.

Such garbage.

I don’t understand why people even care? The first question my mom asked when I “came out” as exmormon was, “But you still believe in God and Jesus right?”. I hate that baby with the bath water saying.

I've had that one, it was a quick response from a relative and kind of made me think that person was projecting their own internal dialogue and that they may be more nuanced than the tbm I thought they were.

I don’t get the reference here. What’s it from?

1968 movie Rosemary’s Baby with Mia Farrow. Gist of the movie is she was impregnated by and gave birth to Satan’s child.

The baby was always covered by a cloth and could only be seen through "spiritual eyes." There is no baby, there is no bathwater. Throw that Tupperware basin full of corruption out the fuck8ng window and don't look back.

I slowly slowly slowly emptied that bath water and it was still dry for months before I recognized there was no baby.

Wish I'd been able to convince myself to leave more quickly

This is my moms favorite thing to say to me in response to my ongoing “faith crisis” ugh it’s infuriating

She doesn’t have any defense with some of the issues she just says yeah I know it looks bad but don’t throw out the baby with the bath water

I only saw baby parts in that bathwater...and they weren't going back together

This. There is no baby and never was. It's more like a floating turd with lipstick and googly eyes - metaphor intended.

Agreed!! No one should tell anyone else what to believe or think.

It makes me furious when people leave Mormonism and still think they have the right to tell others what to believe like wtf

I’m not an anti-theist (I’m a polytheist) but shit like this really makes me understand their concerns. It’s messed up

My bishop told me this after I had inappropriate relations with my non-member girlfriend. As I understand it, in his metaphor, my GF was the dirty bathwater and the Church was the baby. 25 years later I'm glad I figured out that GF was the baby worth keeping, and the church was the bathwater that needed to be disposed of.

The church is happy to throw out the baby to preserve the bath water. I don’t see why I can’t throw the church out.

This is implying that the church is the baby, I see the church as the dirty bath water.
