From the article: "Prior to the acquisition, the hotel-casino was not exactly known as a place where locals would take friends who were visiting the area, according to Boulware. Describing the Sands Regency from that time as a two-star or one-star property was “being kind,” Boulware quipped."
This is more than kind. The new photos and renderings look nice but until they replace the local clientele and stop indoor cigarette smoking this all seems like lipstick on a pig.
I don't know why people are trying to put lipstick on pigs. It was a perfectly serviceable pig. A great pig even! I fucking loved that pig. Imma miss that pig.
We'll see if that pig turns into a hog with raised prices.
$300 million in remodeling is a little bit more than lipstick on a pig
You could smoke indoors? Maan there goes my dream to go to the States, book a hotel and smoke a cigar in a tub, 80's movie style. I figure hotels stopped doing that in the... late 80's. Guess Sands was a different beast?
Nevada is a different beast. They know that the same sorts of addictive personalities who are stuck smoking will also toss a paycheck into a slot machine. They also know that if someone gets up to smoke a cigarette from time to time they may take stock of their losses and decide to go home instead of back to the slot machine. So they use their political clout to keep people from banning smoking in the casinos and let smokers puff away all day long while they keep dumping more of their cash into the casino's pockets.
And the people that go to the Sands are the people who are willing to tolerate many hours of inhaling cigarette smoke (their own or others). The only way to get to the front desk and your hotel room (at the Sands/J) is to walk through a cigarette smoke hell. Renovate and put up new wallpaper, but the cigarette smoke smell and damage permeates everything, and the customers aren't changing notwithstanding the renovation. At other hotels (particularly in Vegas) there are other activities for hotels to make their money so the air is cleaner and the hotels nicer. Not so Reno, and particularly not so the Sands/J.
Except is is (or was?) dirt cheap. If more coin is required there are much better places to stay.
It is now the Jands where the locals wear jorts
I could honestly get onboard with this
Us locals are having a grand time flaming it
If I'm remembering correctly, Sands stood out for having two different signs. One, stood out different than the other for having an S that had a Saia trucking vibe.
The new development on the Northwest corner of the property will displace Lu Ming's 'Desert Guard' (which was at Burning Man in 2018.) I wonder where it'll end up.
It’s been gone for awhile. No idea where it is
Oh! Did not know that.
We stayed at the Sands one year post-Burn. Worst hotel experience we ever had in Reno. Our room had a weird smell, the bathroom door wouldn't close, there was fingernail polish on the side of the tub, and when we tried to get casino reward cards, we were told it took 24 hours to process. We were only there for one night.
Even the casino was a dump.
Hopefully the new owners repaired the rooms.
The only good thing for me about the Sands is I think that’s where the Mel’s Diner was. My post-playa treat used to be chili cheese fries with Italian dressing poured over it. That was all I wanted after being on playa for a week-plus back in the day. (It’s been years and years now, but I still remember how good it tasted)
Mel's is great food. There's one at Boomtown, where we stayed last year-post-playa, and having breakfast after 22 hours of Exodus (11 hours Gate to pavement, two hours in line for gas in Gerlach, and traffic all the way to 80) was divine.
What they didn’t tell you was that a burner group stayed there Pre-Burn..
That was your worst hotel experience? I don't want to judge, but uh okay. What do you stay in when you're at Burning Man?
Please read what I wrote. Worst hotel experience in Reno. As there are no casino hotels at Burning Man, our stays on Playa are not comparable.
In Reno. That helps.
You’re comparing the playa to a hotel you paid money for… ah yes, I do love comparing apples to oranges! GO
