Union busting bullshit from the propaganda division of the billionaire's cabal.

What a shocker.

We get it, NatPo. You hate the working class. Calm down.

MagnificoSuave•

Do government employees count as working class? Are these workers in the union bureaucrats or what are their jobs exactly?

-2†
Karmaze•

I think one of the big problems surrounding this is the misconceptions surrounding what people in this union generally do. I think a lot of them think of them as shiftless bureaucrats, but in reality, you're talking a lot of metric-driven production-based workers who are kept very busy for the majority of their shift.

I think people think it's more like...hmm...I think I'll do a file or two and then go take a long lunch, and then I'll come back and chat with my colleague for half an hour or so, and then maybe I'll do another one. It's not like that at all.

I would certainly classify these government employees as working class.

Lots of trades, line cooks, ship workers, operations etc. huge union with a ton of different groups.

6
DevastatingDevQuébec :Quebec:•

I think most are definitely working class, except the few bureaucrats and consultants who would be in the barely working class.

I agree this article sucks but wouldn't say NatPo hates the working class, they've published many pro working class articles before, it's just usually for the private working class.

“A dollar given to a government employee is a dollar taken out of the pocket of a hard-working Canadian” LOL fucking hell

39
Novus20•

Apparently government workers don’t pay taxes….

22
CureForSunshine•

And don’t work hard either. Whether they’re ACTUALLY Canadian remains to be seen.

This article was written by someone who hates their job lol

This isn't the opinion of an individual columnist, it's the view of the National Post.

Exactly. Someone who hates their job lol

This coming from NP shouldn’t be a surprise anymore

Imagine being anti-union (and therefore, pro Capital) in today's environment.

Complaining about the cost of living and not getting a raise while simultaneously shitting on unions. So fucking dumb.

OP posting an article against people wanting to work from home, yet looking back at OP’s posts talks about how they work from home.

Mark your calendars. This is the only time you'll see National Post support Trudeau and even then, it's the scarecrow version of him they wish was real.

Reveals the true right wing nature behind the paper.

Stand firm Justin Trudeau is a phrase that could only be used by someone who is completely oblivious to who Trudeau is.

The wage increase percentage they are asking for is a bit insane, because no one else has or is getting those kinds of pay increases in the next few years, I can guarantee that. Otherwise, the union's demands are fine.

Inflation or not, no one else in this country is getting a 46% wage increase over the next 3 years. These are also government employees who already have great benefits and good wages to begin with.

KillreaJones•

How did you get that number lol a 46% over 3 years is not accurate in the slightest. You think it's insane because you misunderstood. Also fwiw, usually when unions negotiated pay increases it does have an effect on the market rate for salaries in those positions

On the news today, it seems that striking workers are getting exhausted with this strike. Tired of picketing the lines, worried about their cashflow. If the Government does stand firm, what would PSAC and the workers do?

-5
mikeyhol•

Stand firmer

10
backlight101•

PSAC is just a group of workers, if they are exhausted, they’re going to accept the latest offer.

NDP are literally the ones keeping the Liberal government alive in the last no-confidence vote??? Why would you vote NDP if you dont like the Liberals? Literally the same party at this point.

Do public servants make, on average, a higher salary than the private sector? Yes. IMO, is this backwards? Also yes. BUT, should this be seen as an opportunity of, instead of jealousy and revenge, a chance for the private sector workers to reflect and ask "should we organize?"

The answer again is yes.

Public sector workers have such good pay and benefits because they're incredibly well organized. If most of the major private sector labour groups were to organize, you could stand to see some substantial benefits and pay increases. One worker threatening to walk off the job is an inconvenience. The whole damn labour force of that group doing the same forces employers to the table.

-7†
HDC3•

I worked for the government until 2011. I now make more than 2.5 times as much as the people at the same rank as me then are making now. Some government workers make more than comparable private sector workers. Many make way less.

People who don't know what they are taking about shouldn't spread bullshit. It doesn't help the discussion.

Stop saying the government workers should get less because you get less. Start demanding that you get more because they get more.

Stop being crabs in a barrel.

30
I_Am_the_SlobsterPrince Edward Island :PEI:•

Read the last paragraph of my response: I agree that we shouldn't bring down gov salaries, I'm saying that private sector workers should be seeing this as the benefit of organizing for their own sake.

But at the same time, I do feel it's correct that private sector jobs should be paid more than public sector: Private sector work is higher paying but risky in that an economic downturn could mean a layoff, whereas public sector work should pay less but is far more secure in the event of an economic downturn.

For an example, I as a teacher could make far more money performing corporate training seminars, but working with a private consulting firm is much riskier than working for a school board and capping out at ~$93k a year (after 17 years of teaching).
