I am defining J1 here as the job you prioritize vs the jobs you just milk for cash. A job that actually uses relevant tech, has smart people, still lets you learn stuff, etc. in comparison with my J2 and my prior J2 which are/were staffed with idiots.

My J1 recently laid off a large portion of the staff. One of those across the board cuts where every team lost in 1 in 5 people. Got to see the people on dark on Slack live as they turned out the lights.

I survived, as did my team due to open positions. However, I have never really lived through a period of layoffs, nor do I know how layoffs work.

I am in the midst of searching for a J3 and have a dozen interviews past the third stage or

A lot of you have probably never really encountered a true B or C player or been part of a B or C organization. Why? You got good grades, got into a good school, got into a professional track program, and got a good job out of university and a reputable company. Between my 3 jobs, I have about $6000 in training money available to me. As someone always looking to optimize my returns, I am obviously interested in using it to benefit me in some way if possible.

Before my J1 started thinking more about career development and I got two other jobs, my experience with training opportunities was maybe a few bucks for Udemy.

What ideas have you got? As far as I know, my managers have extreme flexibility with the money.

EDIT: Field is software development.

At my job 3, they just announced return to office for anyone who lives nearby. This is even though they hired people remotely with the explicit expectation of them staying remote.

I live many provinces away, so I got an exemption. Nobody else did though :)

You should trust your company on remote policy as much as you trust them on pay raises.

Moved 2 hours away? Fuck you. In you come.
