Really interesting poll results, if a bit simplistic. Looks like we should avoid "capitalism" and focus on "free enterprise" instead

Big Business Jan. '00 49% Nov. '12 58%
After the '08 crash and the further realizations that we're in a protracted depression, big business' good PR increases?
Very true. Capitalism in theory might be a good thing. In practice, people tend to view capitalism as synonymous with corporatism, fascism, and cronyism.
Arguments against using the word capitalism:
Refusing to say "capitalism" apparently irritates people whose identity is deeply invested in that word.
Not saying "capitalism" makes it more possible to discuss real, accurately described systems in detail and completion without ambiguity.
Not saying "capitalism" makes you 28% more well received by Republicans and 45% more well received by Democrats.
Let's see what reason number 4 will be.
Looks like this was posted in Libertarian a while back, but I hadn't seen it here yet. Any thoughts?
I'd rather shock people than please them. One protects the status quo, the other promotes real change.
It doesn't matter what we call things. The Marxists will always make up their own definitions, strawman the hell out of them, and then declare that we're evil, our system doesn't work, and we support corporate feudalism and hate the poor.
This is why morally-nihilistic, methodologically-individualistic ancaps are their worst nightmare; we completely sidestep every one of their objections and deconstruct beautifully the fallacies they use as a foundation for their belief system.
Sure, I think people are going to have trouble with some of our ideas no matter what we call them. However, if simple word choice leads many more people to consider our ideas, or, at the very least, not have a negative reaction to those ideas, I am all for altering my vocabulary accordingly.
Marxists will never consider our ideas. They are not interested in ideas. They function off of pure emotion.
Why are you so fixated on Marxists? I have never met an honest to goodness "Marxist" IRL, but have met plenty of statists of the left persuasion that I feel a simple word choice on my part could help out.
Many Marxists don't call themselves Marxists because it's not socially acceptable, or because it's strategically unwise (or maybe they're too dumb to know they advocate Marxism).
Leftists are "Marxists-lite". They use all the same tactics. They corrupt the language and use their moral superiority to browbeat everyone else.
Good for the Marxists. I'm sure that one we convert that target demographic a stateless society will be inevitable.
It's universally accepted among PR people that what people name something is will frame their mental picture of it and influence their opinions. "Torture" or "enhanced interrogation." "Asking the rich to pay a little bit more" or "taxes." "Department of Defense" or "Department of War."
Rejecting appeals to emotion is a bad strategy too. It sure works out for the statists, after all.
So Obama is a voluntaryist after all!
