‘Stop crying. The neighbours can hear you’

Support

My girlfriend broke up with me today, and I’m just having a lot of self loathing because it was pretty much my fault. It all kind of overflowed as I went to bed and I was loud ugly crying in my bed.

Enter my mum:

“Stop crying. The neighbours can hear…”

“Well you said it wasn’t working out anyways.”

“ Mrs X’s daughter broke up from a 6 year relationship and she was fine.”

“You’re a guy you need to cope with these things.”

“We’ve gone through these things too it’s fine.”

…I was trying to let it all out but now I can’t even do that, plus a few extra hits from those comments. I already felt super alone and now I somehow feel even less supported even from my own parents. I was crying also about how my medical school rotations are starting again, and I feel so tired and overwhelmed. Mums first response was ‘don’t you dare let this affect your career.’

I want a cuddle except the only person I could get it from is gone now. I hate my life.

Reading this made me sick. Honestly, would it kill them to say something comforting or lend a shoulder, or at least to just SHUT UP??

Going through breakups can be hard. Please, please, PLEASE don't feel bad for crying it out. It's OKAY to cry. Take this experience and try to enrich the next one.

Fucking cunts. Honestly. If you want your boys to be stronger, this is NOT how you do it.

Holy, am I so triggered right now. They're just there, spouting shit uselessly while you suffer through something that you haven't been through before in their ivory tower of life experience. THAT'S THE POINT. HE HASN'T GONE THROUGH THAT BEFORE. NOW ACT LIKE A PARENT AND I don't know, GUIDE him through this heartbreak since you have that life experience, instead of rubbing your son's face in it like rubbing into a pile of shit?? Because that's what your "life experience" is like now. Useless and condescending.

Look, young man. You are going to be fine. But cry it out, do something fun for yourself. The how's and the why's can be left till later to be analyzed.

It's going to be fine. You're going to try to be a better boyfriend next time. But now is time to rest a bit. Reflect later.

This was what I needed to read. It’s so validating and I feel motivated…somewhat. I love you people man.

saying this the most respectful way possible, heat and pressure forms diamonds.

-29
LorienzoDeGarcia•

And this is what people say when you treat people like objects.

If I want to retort at your level, wrong heat and pressure can crack the clay pot you're trying to make.

All his parents are doing are telling him to ignore his emotions and stop crying because they don't want to see weakness. This is not how true strength works. True strength is when you get confronted with adversities and emotions, duly processed it, then learn lessons from it and moving on stronger. You and his parents are essentially telling him to just mask over the surface of the defect of the clay pot and putting it into the oven with raging heat while we here all say that you smooth over the defect from inside-out before putting it into the oven with appropriate heat.

Being nice to girls without actually being genuinely a good person inside and you get a "Nice Guy" incel. Appearing outwardly "strong" without actual cultivated strength and you get a miserable insecure person that'll have no problem justifying being treated like a doormat because it makes him look "strong". Sounds familiar?

What OP's facing is big for his stage of life. Let him process it healthily. Your inspirational quote is as flashy and shiny as the veneers OP's parents are wanting OP to put on his unhealed wound: Surface-level and pretentious.

With no offense intended, you are the AP we are talking about in this sub.

my_mirai•

Great response! Wish I had an award to give to your words.

I guess you're true in that logic but you just gave me a new idea. Some people are born diamonds, others the dull clay pot. When heat and pressure is applied on a diamond it becomes stronger and a beautiful shine. Apply heat and pressure to the clay however and it turns more ugly and dull. I guess the people of the subreddit are all clay pots they could never be as valuable as diamonds. The reason why your parents were hard on you guys was because they don't their child to be clay, they want a diamond, but that could never happen. You were born clay, will live as clay for long time, then die as clay, living your singular life as nothing extraordinary.

Considering many of you took offense to that simple phrase it also tells me you guys have such a weak, weak, weak mentality. I bet you guys don't even last 5 seconds on the treadmill lol. If asian parents are the number 1 reason for your pain, this subreddit is reason 2. This subreddit is pathetic, none of you guys go to therapy, you guys just complain to others trying to suck out attention and sympathy because you know you're worthless but want other people to say the opposite. Well you guys may not take this idea that much and no one is forcing you. If you guys are under 18 you can change. But if you're an adult on this subreddit I don't even expect much from a grown man still complaining and wanting sympathy.

LorienzoDeGarcia•

If that is literally all you took from my comment, then good luck to you, Mr. New Redditor for 50 minutes.

May you get someone to change... only into the version that you like. I am sure it will be a wonderful relationship.

Everyone is a diamond if you polish it correctly. But sure. Immediately categorize everyone as diamonds and claypots, you being the strong, STRONG diamond star that you are, or course!! Keep being an asshole to your kid and see what happens.

Weak it is. You willingly came to someone who is currently vulnerable specifically in a RANT post in a moment of vulnerability and called him WEAK. LOL you can't make this shit up. That's literally called BULLYING. Another one of those assholes with hollow bravado. You're exactly the AP we're talking about. But sure. Keep beating the kid up to make it stronger!! Keep creating more broken people!! Bravo!! Keep telling your kid he's weak! I am SURE he will learn not to be weak. Just because you tell him so. Just tell a kid to stop falling down from a bike when it's the first time he's riding it! SO helpful!!

There are tons here that go to therapy but of course you don't want to see those posts. Your account only existed for a mere second after all. And of course in a lot of Asian places there's not even a therapist to speak of because there's simply no market for it because of the culture, and a lot of us can't afford it, and some of us are still minors under our helicopter parents' grip so sure! tHeRaPy!! It's SO EASY!!

Keep lashing out. Contrary to your belief, NO ONE is taking offense to you. We just simply see you for what you are as clear as we can see the back of our hand (we've went through it all our lives and woke up to it, after all), and it's fucking sad. You can keep clowning and beating your chest in your AP bravado all you like. I guess no one ever allowed you to cry because just look how triggered you are because SOMEONE, GOD FORBID is sad.

OP, this is what you become when you allow your parents to influence you to only appear strong without any substance to back it up. He's dime a dozen. You're good. You got that? We must be better.

Yeah my mom wasn’t the most comforting when I going through a breakup in high school and I was extremely depressed because of it. AP don’t understand dating, love, companionship, and romance. They seem to expect us to be like robot like “ok, on to the next. Will find someone who is a doctor or rich af.” But don’t understand that it takes time to build a genuine connection with someone, liking them, hoping if they like you back, flirting, and more. I’m sorry for what you’re going through, break up is rough. If you know why she broke up with you, maybe see if that’s something to work on for yourself.

37
TheExplodingMushroomOPAsian Kid•

I do and that’s part of why I’m hating myself so much but that’s not the point.

They keep saying because I’m going to have an illustrious career that it’s gonna be so easy for me to find someone. That’s what they’re comforting me with. I just feel so insulted

22
b_gumiho•

They keep saying because I’m going to have an illustrious career that it’s gonna be so easy for me to find someone.

wow thats so insulting! the true answer is, youll find someone the same way that person will find you. they will love you for you... not because of your career or earning potential.

just as much as youll love them for them... not because of their career or earning potential.

Mum literally had a stronger reaction to me jokingly saying that I want to quit medicine because I dont think I can handle it rn than when I told her the news that I got dumped.

Are we brothers from another mother or what? Instead of this, they said something very similar: Just get a great university degree and no one will bully/disrespect you anymore.

Yeah. Instead of actually teaching and guiding me to cultivate my confidence (I was already as introvert as can be), they'd rather beat me down and somehow studying to become a doctor, lawyer or engineer will "save" me and make up for all of the toxic bullshit that they do not need to take accountability for. And of course, it also insinuates that you aren't worth jack-shit unless you're these approved professions.

It's sick. For a long time I didn't understand why I felt so insulted too. But I guess the above analysis/thought is kind of why.

2
TheExplodingMushroomOPAsian Adult•

I’m also mega introverted, to the extent where unless it’s with my very close friends I don’t really talk. I really have no clue how the hell I found anyone with my level of introversion.

But don’t understand that it takes time to build a genuine connection with someone, liking them, hoping if they like you back, flirting, and more.

This. My AM is always telling me to find someone who is a doctor or lawyer (or insert professional field), who is superior to me in all areas (education, family background, character, yada yada) to date. Well no, firstly, wouldn't their parents be telling them the same thing? Secondly, it has to start with a genuine connection and then mutual fondness! I seriously wondered how my parents dated back then.

3

saying this the most respectful way possible that doesn't try to offend anyone from a South korean's position, I think what you said is a bit harsh and in some way racist. You insulted every asian parent.

Oh my goodness, your AM is awful and I’m so sorry you are unsupported in this time.

Your feelings are completely valid and anyone would be grieving “loud ugly crying in bed” in your position.

Sometimes I would get in the car and drive to a secluded place and cry. Are you able to do that?

22
TheExplodingMushroomOPAsian Kid•

Unfortunately no. I don’t have a spare car and even if I did I wouldn’t want to risk driving in my current mental state.

Thank you for the kind words though :)

APs are not equipped to respond to emotions — it’s OK to be sad.

14

I'm so sorry you're going through such a hard time, and I hope you're able to find safer spaces/other ways to let out your emotions, because it will be incredibly healthy to do so, and it'll help the healing process go a little faster. I hope you're able to take care of yourself through this. Small steps, frequent breaks to rest, giving yourself permission to feel what you are feeling is so incredibly important.

Screw the people who dismiss and minimize you, who don't give you the patience to listen and empathize.

I am also reminded by my own experience of not being able to receive support from my own AP. When I went through my break-up from a long-term relationship (it ran its course), all I received were years of pent-up feelings and opinions from the AP about how he thought the ex was awful, things he didn't say during the duration of the relationship up until then. I cried in front of him hearing this because he was too busy attacking the ex for absolutely no good reason, ONLY for the AP to become angrier because he hated when I cried.

Who the hell made him think it was OK to say all this stuff?! All I simply said was that I broke up with this person, and I get all this crap being dumped on me?! So instead of becoming furious in front of him and starting WIII trying to explain things to him that he couldn't possibly understand, I retreated because there was no point in trying. He was too busy seeing how I was walking away from him and not respecting him by not listening to what it was he had to say as a parent. So he was fuming at the end, and pounded my door once to get the "last word" so to speak. It was a very hard lesson in not trusting the AP with my emotions because they don't know how to deal with their own feelings of discomfort when vulnerability is presented in front of them.

So if I ever have to go through another hard breakup though, I'd take it to the bathroom (purely for the acoustics) and cry loudly until the neighbors hear and embarrass AP simply because I can, and I can tell them to eff off until I'm done sobbing my heart out.

Going through breakups will always be hard regardless of gender. Fuck them for their sexist bullshit. A breakup on top of a stressful career is always a bad combo, but is often inevitable for many. I hope these comments can offer you some sort of comfort :( May I offer an internet hug?

[Edit: Put a line through the driving/car advice because I saw you said you don’t have a spare car and don’t want to drive right now. Still kept it up because I think it’s good advice in general.]

Also I assume you drive? Maybe pretend you went out to get some food and just cry in a parking lot or a secluded area if you can (put up or buy a privacy cover or sunshade for your car if you’re feeling self conscious). Maybe find a secluded area on campus or in the hospital you’ll do rotations in. Shit, worse comes to worse, find a unisex/single occupancy bathroom and just cry in there. Lord knows I’ve done that.

I’ve also been helped by strangers when crying, and I’ve helped strangers crying and having a panic attack in the public restroom. Of course, I am a woman in the US so this may be different for you.

The pain will be there for awhile, especially when you really cared for and loved her. But, the pain will also go away in due time. No one can tell you how long it’ll take to heal and process a break up but you. Take all the time you need to.

LavenderPearlTea•

So sorry you are going through this. Treat yourself like you have a cold - take care of yourself and don’t push yourself. Of course you feel like crap right now. Of course Asian parents don’t know how to emotionally support you at this time.

I went through a divorce after nine years of marriage and two kids. The end of a relationship can feel like devastating, but its not the end. Hang in there. You will be okay. Give yourself permission to feel sad. If you stuff it all in, you’ll become like one of the Asian parents we come here to vent about.

4
ConstructivePraise•

Many APs are emotionally immature. They weren’t offered emotional support as kids and they never learned how to support others. Zero ability of empathy. When I was struggling with job interviews and rejections in academia before, AM said “other people seem to find jobs pretty easily, why is it so hard for you?” And for her it’s just a genuine question. Zero concern how it might sound to me or make me feel. It’s really tough. I’m afraid the kind of love you want, they just can’t give. (Their care might come in forms of physically taking care of you and materials.)So need to learn to parent and love yourself, form other supportive relationships. Maybe one day their words wouldn’t feel so personal, but just a reflection of their ability, not your lovability

4
ConstructivePraise•

Oh forgot to add something: from your AM perspective it could go like “my son is crying so hard, he looks so sad. How can I stop him from crying?” This is because they somehow believe not crying = not sad. They don’t quite understand that people have an inner emotional world. For them, the outside appearance is everything. If you look fine, then you ARE fine. So in some way, your AM is trying to “help” in a terrible and incompetent way.

4
my_mirai•

My AP's are also awful and would do the same unhelpful comments, invalidation, dimsiing my emotions and causing more harm to me when I was already weak. What changed my life for better was to slowly stop telling them any of my problems. If they cannot value me as a human being they no longer have any right to be let in. Basically I fired them from the emotional support part of parenthood. (That was first step and I'm firing them from more and more parent positions and am turning towards self-parenting + therapy now.) It sucks to not have proper nurturing and support from humans who are supposed to provide just that. But locking my heart's door to them despite being hard at first was the best thing I did for self-care. Because their reactions were always like: "Wow, you are hurt? Oh dear let me rub you further into that mud and hurt you even more while you are weakened!"

Ultimately I came to the cruel fact that I draw firm boundaries and don't let them in so that they would do this "further harming thing". I don't mean completely repressing my emotions and hiding everything since that's also harmful for mental health and unsustainable if you are living with them. But I did hide as much as I could, sought support elsewhere and with them it was like: "Yes, currently I'm crying/am not cheerful happy cause some stuff happened. Nothing too big, don't worry. I will handle it." They would press me to explain the reason. To open up. Never. I didn't give them anything. I found out that mostly their reactions were because either they were bothered by loudness of crying, or since they were enmeshed with me they felt a damage to their ego and self-worth cause how can THEIR kid be not perfect or just plain scared of emotions existing. Also they expected me to calm them down and soothe their fear and confusion around all of this. They'd press the boundary hard at first wanting me to tell what was the matter, guilt tripping that "they are worried" but I'd calmly state that it was nothing that big and if it was of course I'd tell them. I gray rocked and stood my boundary so after a few such moments they learnt to leave me alone. Again, totally awful and unfair to us that this is what we get from our nurtuing caregivers. But all they could do was cause more harm. If they can't do any good at least I don't let them do me any bad when I'm already hurting.

About crying: Since my childhood they always had an issue with loud crying to point of abusing me for that and openly prohibiting me for it. Dad's point was that he can't bear to hear sound of crying as it reminds him some of (quite valid) trauma's form his childhood, for which of course he never got therapy and is indenial cause he is so cool and strong etc. But his way of dealing with this trigger of this wasn't valid at all. At best they'd shame me with neighbours can hear. At worst... more damage. I'm adding this experience of mine cause I read you mentioned you can't go driving alone to cry it all out freely. I couldn't cry loudly at home most of time so what I did (maybe some of these can be helpful for you): at home cry into the blanket/pillow so it's not heard (most desperate version when I was stuck at home), go to the playground/parks at night and cry there, crying in secluded places like the sea side (especially if there are loud waves and it's winter so no ppl around for sure), if not the sea I'd go to the mountains and forests/forest like big parks. Then I also loved the rainy weather. Rain is just so loud and ppl are rushing under umbrellas to get away from the rain. I'd choose some secluded place and something about the water around, the sounds made me feel safe to cry it all loud. Bonus points after crying and waiting it out so that so signs were left on my face I'd go home and treat myself to a warm bath + some tea/snacks cozy time. Hope any of these help you. Sad that we have to do these extra steps to preserve ourselves from the AP though :(

Yeah when i broke up with my boyfriend of 3 years my mom told me to get over it because she needed help in the yard at the moment. But then a few weeks later asked if she could still talk to him and such. Ended up calling him to console him that sometimes things dont work out. Guess she blames me for the relationship ending because she LOVED him. Still talks to him and his parents almost a year later and gives me updates on him

ETA: I’m sorry you have to go through this. None of us should. I know it sounds cheesy but it will get better. You will feel better with time. Everything happens for a reason. I’m not very good at reassuring someone over the internet. Apologies if this doesnt make you feel any better

3

I am sorry that your relationship with your girlfriend didn't work out, especially at a stressful time in your life. Even if things weren't going well, it still hurts even more when the relationship actually ends. Crying is a much healthier way to cope than how our parents dealt with their grief (taking out rage on others). I'm also sorry that her first concern was that the neighbors can hear, not if you were okay or not. The way I look at long work weeks when I'm already stressed out and tired is at least I am not at home with my mom.

Crying not only makes you feel better by raising oxytocin and endorphins, the tears themselves wash out excess stress hormones, especially emotional tears. That is why we feel better after a good ugly cry, it is literally purging us of stress chemicals and bringing us back to homeostasis. Knowing the science of crying helped me not feel so ashamed of it.

This is one of the reasons I never tell my relationships to my parents and also never cried in front of them, I would expect them to react as your parents did since I have been called a “girl” by them for crying as a guy and I am really sorry your parents are doing that to you.

It’s torture, but I empathize with you. I would definitely cry in private if I was you and your feelings are valid so don’t let them put you down. You have every right to be sad and they have every right to fuck off with their crappy attitudes.
