Laptop upgrade

All Firm

I was notified that I am set for a PC Refresh and my 2 options are a Apple M2 MacBook Air and Microsoft Surface Laptop 5. I have been using a HP X360 G6 for 3 years and have loved it.

Anyone have experience with using a MacBook for work? How is the experience with PwC technology / Microsoft and Google apps?

If you’re not familiar with iOS for Max, it’s gonna be a pain in the ass to keep your shit organized

Mac is great for leisure activities, Microsoft based PCs are designed for business. I do not recommend Mac. Had to switch to PC, much more user friendly :-)

Ha not a chance, macs are superior in almost every possible way, except gaming, over windows machines.

Lifelong Windows users who switched to Mac. Mac is for sure better if you can afford it. Moving your stuff is very easy.

I have a 16” m1pro 32gig in P&T. FUCKING leaps and bounds better than the ole elitebook. Stellar battery life along with all the other goodies that come with the new macs. I went through 2 elite books in 8 months. Absolute trash. So glad my partners went with it! Couldn’t ask for a better work computer or computer in general.

Absolutely do not go for the Mac

There’s going to be so many files, downloads, links, etc that clients send you that just won’t open or work or will require some hoops to jump through. Not worth it

This is definitely not true

Awful, lots of compatibility issues and generally not worth it from what I hear

MacBooks are awesome i've been a heavy Apple product user for over 10 years but there is one catch: doing Excel on the Mac isn't exactly a lot of fun

I have the MacBook Pro and really like it. You’ll need a windows virtual machine for a few admin items but overall I’d recommend the apple. My battery dominates everyone else, the keyboard is way better and if you’re in the apple ecosystem you can do some cool things with AirPods transfer between devices, Apple Watch computer unlock, common notes and cross device copy paste. Also if you have a firm iPad it can be your second screen when traveling.

So I’m in the tech connect dept. (just started recently)the Macbook Air and the Surface are now the standard refresh computers. No need to “qualify” anymore. 😊 When you get the refresh email you’ll see what software the Mac can and can’t run. Most stuff is cloud based so there aren’t many limitations. All the MS programs run swimmingly on the Mac tho. I’m a Mac lover and user at work, but I like my HP G8 too! I haven’t touched the Surface yet.

Ah ok, I’m UK based so would’ve been able to give a perspective from this side.

I do know that there are applications not available for macOS such as Alteryx, PowerBI and Visio to name a few.

In the UK firm iCloud traffic is blocked on desktop so all the nice iCloud stuff other people have mentioned doesn’t work well here. The US network policies for that stuff may be different.

Apple’s own M series chips in their laptops are great though, particularly for battery life.

As for the Surface Pro, unless you’re desperate for portability I wouldn’t bother with one. We issue Surface Pro 7/7+ in the UK and they’re not that great performance wise.

I love my apple.

Vote for Surface over here.

I use an M1 MacBook Pro. I miss Alteryx and feel like my version of OneNote is lacking a lot of features. Otherwise no complaints. From a hardware perspective it is far far better than anything on the PC side. My old laptop sounded like a jet engine and weighed as much as one too. This one doesn’t even have an audible fan.

I miss Alteryx

Easy Data Transform runs natively on an M1 Mac. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of Alteryx, but it is also much cheaper.

The majority of desktop apps the firm uses are not Mac compatible. The hilarious part is the mobile apps work best on iOS devices.

If you’re thinking of getting the macbook air. Also look into a referbished m1 pro 14 inch. Not much more but way better PC

How long does the delivery take from the day you fill the form?

If you can run Parallels on your Mac this will allow you to run Windows alongside your Mac OS and move files back and forth seamlessly. If it were a true MacBook Pro and not an Air, I would go that route having lived in the Mac ecosystem for as long as I can remember. Not overly certain about the Air specs to really compare them.

I never understand the hate about organization. It's directories/folders/files ---> same on both systems.

What are the specs on the surface laptop 5? Is it the low end model or higher?

For anyone searching this later on - I got the Surface 5, i have adjusted to it now and I'm comfortable with it. The major difference is size of the laptop and keyboard layout (home and end were so much better on the elitebook). I have since started using my Bluetooth keyboard (free if you ship to an office from the Service Now bookmark in Chrome). Everything else is likable and similar enough to the elitebook i had previously. The charger that the Surface comes with is strange, but it does also charge via USB C, tech later told me I should have kept my charger from the elitebook, oh well.
